Are you an experienced ecologist looking for a role where you can take greater ownership of projects, develop junior colleagues and deliver genuinely positive outcomes for biodiversity?

My client is an award-winning sustainability consultancy looking to appoint a Senior Ecology & Biodiversity Consultant to its growing London team.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys combining technical ecology with project and client management. You'll work on a varied portfolio of development-led projects, helping clients move beyond simply mitigating ecological impacts towards delivering measurable improvements for biodiversity.

London | Hybrid Working | Ecology & Biodiversity Consultancy

The Role

You'll take responsibility for ecology and biodiversity projects from inception through to delivery, working independently on your own projects while contributing technical expertise to larger multidisciplinary schemes.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading ecology and biodiversity projects through the planning process.
  • Undertaking and reviewing Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs).
  • Delivering Biodiversity Net Gain assessments using the Statutory Biodiversity Metric.
  • Producing habitat and BNG mapping using QGIS.
  • Undertaking and leading UKHab, PEA and bat surveys.
  • Preparing and reviewing BREEAM Ecology Credit Assessments.
  • Delivering protected species surveys and reports.
  • Providing technical QA of ecological reports.
  • Managing projects, budgets and client relationships.
  • Supporting proposals and new project opportunities.
  • Line managing, mentoring and developing junior ecologists.
  • Working alongside sustainability and environmental specialists on larger multidisciplinary projects.

What We're Looking For

You’ll already have good experience within UK ecological consultancy and be comfortable taking responsibility for projects with limited supervision.

We're particularly interested in candidates with strong experience in:

  • UKHab and Preliminary Ecological Appraisals
  • Biodiversity Net Gain and the Statutory Biodiversity Metric
  • QGIS
  • Bat survey design and delivery
  • Bat call identification and analysis
  • Protected species surveys
  • Botanical identification
  • BREEAM ecology assessments
  • Technical report writing and review

You’ll also ideally have experience in another area such as Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) or Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA).

A relevant degree in ecology, biology, environmental science or a related discipline is required, with an MSc desirable. Protected species licences would be advantageous, and you’ll ideally be a Full Member of CIEEM.

Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who is enthusiastic about nature conservation, technically capable, organised and confident dealing directly with clients.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This is a consultancy that puts sustainability and biodiversity at the heart of what it does. You’ll join a collaborative team where you’ll have the opportunity to influence projects, develop your expertise and help mentor the next generation of ecologists.

The package includes:

  • Competitive salary plus potential discretionary bonus.
  • Hybrid working from the London office.
  • 23 days' annual leave plus bank holidays.
  • Enhanced pension contributions.
  • Structured training and career development.
  • Opportunity to work abroad for a set period each year.
  • Enhanced family policies.
  • Two volunteering days each year.
  • Cycle to work scheme.
  • Health, wellbeing and lifestyle benefits.
  • Regular team socials.
  • Opportunities to contribute to industry initiatives and professional working groups.
