My client is a well-established consultancy operating across the built and natural environment, with a strong and growing pipeline of work across infrastructure, transport, water, and development sectors. Due to continued growth and project demand, my client is looking to appoint a Principal Ecologist to play a key role in leading project delivery and supporting the expansion of their London-based ecology team.
The Role
This is a senior, leadership-focused position where you will take ownership of projects from tender through to completion, working across both public and private sector developments.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and delivering a range of ecological projects from bid stage through to completion
- Managing surveys, data analysis, reporting, and client engagement
- Overseeing ecological inputs within multidisciplinary project teams
- Applying for and managing protected species mitigation licences
- Acting as a key point of contact for clients, stakeholders, and regulators
- Managing project budgets, programmes, and team utilisation
- Mentoring and supporting junior team members
- Supporting business development and contributing to bids
- Playing a key role in growing the London ecology team
Project exposure includes:
- Infrastructure and transport schemes
- Residential and mixed-use development
- Habitat creation and biodiversity enhancement projects

About You
Essential:
- Degree in Ecology, Environmental Management, or a related discipline
- Significant experience within a UK ecological consultancy
- Strong knowledge of UK habitats, protected species, and legislation
- Proven experience managing projects and delivering high-quality outputs
- Experience mentoring or managing junior team members
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable:
- Membership of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (MCIEEM or working towards)
- Protected species licences
- Experience with Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)
- GIS capability
- Chartered Ecologist (or working towards)
