My client is a well-established consultancy operating across the built and natural environment, with a strong and growing pipeline of work across infrastructure, transport, water, and development sectors. Due to continued growth and project demand, my client is looking to appoint a Principal Ecologist to play a key role in leading project delivery and supporting the expansion of their London-based ecology team.

The Role

This is a senior, leadership-focused position where you will take ownership of projects from tender through to completion, working across both public and private sector developments. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and delivering a range of ecological projects from bid stage through to completion
  • Managing surveys, data analysis, reporting, and client engagement
  • Overseeing ecological inputs within multidisciplinary project teams
  • Applying for and managing protected species mitigation licences
  • Acting as a key point of contact for clients, stakeholders, and regulators
  • Managing project budgets, programmes, and team utilisation
  • Mentoring and supporting junior team members
  • Supporting business development and contributing to bids
  • Playing a key role in growing the London ecology team

Project exposure includes:

  • Infrastructure and transport schemes
  • Residential and mixed-use development
  • Habitat creation and biodiversity enhancement projects

About You

  • Essential
    • Degree in Ecology, Environmental Management, or a related discipline
    • Significant experience within a UK ecological consultancy
    • Strong knowledge of UK habitats, protected species, and legislation
    • Proven experience managing projects and delivering high-quality outputs
    • Experience mentoring or managing junior team members
    • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
    • Full UK driving licence
  • Desirable
    • Membership of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (MCIEEM or working towards)
    • Protected species licences
    • Experience with Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)
    • GIS capability
    • Chartered Ecologist (or working towards)
