If you are already self‑employed or considering becoming self‑employed, we would like to hear from you. Our onboarding process starts with a friendly conversation. All our engineers are required to have their own insurance and their equipment calibrated at least once a year. In return, along with our engineer handbook, contract for services and branded clothing, we supply labels and technical support.

Job Description

We offer self‑employed positions with flexible hours, allowing interested individuals to work either part‑time or full‑time. Although we understand that some may travel further afield, we require all applicants to have a reasonable commuting distance to Walsall or closer. Potential earnings are based on a pro‑rate basis depending on the rate per appliance, the number of tests and job dynamics. Jobs range from one‑day projects to long‑term contracts. You must have transport or means to travel, hold a City & Guilds 2377 PAT qualification or equivalent, be reliable and honest, and have a ‘can‑do’ attitude. All necessary equipment, including testing instruments, measuring devices, and additional tools, must be kept up‑to‑date, in good working order, and meet relevant regulations.

Typical Day

As a PAT engineer, no two days are the same. You will work from hospitals to retail outlets, packing up testers and record books into a van before heading to the first job. Once on site, you will test appliances such as microwaves, kettles and computers that require PAT testing, using test instruments to check safety. You will inform users of the results and explain why certain appliances may be unfit for use. After testing you will record findings in a PAT test report book or electronically, and provide employers with a copy. Additional paperwork such as completion certificates and checklists may be required. You will move from one location to another, alone or as part of a team, so staying organised and completing tests accurately and efficiently is essential. This role is physically and mentally demanding, but rewards are significant. It provides variety and opportunities for advancement.

Benefits & Culture

Being part of JR is more than an income; you are made to feel part of a family. Your well‑being is a priority and we support you when personal issues arise. You will be supported by genuinely friendly staff who will look after you. The company has a 30‑year veteran in electrical disciplines from PAT Testing to Electrical Maintenance Engineering.
