If you are already self‑employed or considering becoming self‑employed, we would like to hear from you. Our onboarding process starts with a friendly conversation. All our engineers must have their own insurance and ensure their equipment is calibrated at least once a year. In return, along with our engineer handbook, contract for services, and branded clothing, we supply labels and technical support.
We offer self‑employed positions with flexible hours, enabling applicants to work part‑time or full‑time. The role involves traveling to various sites across the UK to conduct Portable Appliance Testing (PAT). Our jobs range from one‑day projects to longer contracts, with earnings on a pro‑rated basis depending on the rate per appliance, number of tests, and job dynamics.
Applicants must have reliable transport, a City & Guilds 2377 PAT qualification or equivalent, and maintain all required equipment—including testers, measuring devices, and additional tools—in good working order and compliant with regulations. Reliability, honesty, and a can‑do attitude are essential.
A typical day of a portable appliance testing (PAT) engineer varies, covering locations from hospitals to retail outlets. The day starts with packing all necessary tools and equipment into the van before heading to the first job. On site, appliances such as microwaves, kettles, and computers are tested using various instruments designed to verify safety or identify issues. Results are communicated to users, explaining why certain appliances may be unfit for use. Testing findings are recorded in a dedicated PAT test report book or an electronic system, and employers receive copies. Additional paperwork, such as completion certificates and checklists, may be required.
Throughout the day, the engineer is constantly on the move, either alone or with a team, requiring organization and accuracy to ensure all tests are completed efficiently. The role demands skill, experience, and patience, offering rewards as the engineer contributes to workplace safety while advancing personal knowledge and expertise. Overall, PAT testing is a physically and mentally demanding career with varied opportunities for advancement. It is ideal for those seeking a challenging and dynamic role.
