A typical day of a portable appliance testing (PAT) engineer involves working in a variety of locations and environments. A typical day starts with packing up all the necessary tools and equipment – including testers and record books – into the van before setting off to the first job. Upon arriving on site, you test all appliances – such as microwaves, kettles and computers – to determine whether they are safe for continued use or require replacement or repair. You also inform users of the results and explain why certain appliances may be unfit for use. When all testing is complete, you record findings in a PAT test report book or electronic system and provide employers with a copy. You may also be required to fill out additional paperwork such as completion certificates and checklists. Throughout the day you move from one location to another – alone or part of a team – so staying organised and ensuring all tests are completed accurately and efficiently is essential.
Success in this role requires skill, experience and patience, but the rewards are great. You help keep workplaces safe and develop your own knowledge and expertise. Overall, PAT testing is a physically and mentally demanding career with variety and opportunities for advancement – making it a challenging and rewarding role.
