All our engineers are to have their own insurance and to have their equipment calibrated at least once a year. In return, along with our engineer handbook, contract for services, and branded clothing, we supply labels and technical support.

Employment Type: PAT Engineers can be from any background and these positions are self‑employed.

Education Level: Having the City & Guilds 2377 or equivalent is the prerequisite.

Months Experience: Proven competence in line with the C&G is the most pertinent.

Job Location: Hampstead & commutable areas. Reasonable commuting distance or closer but engineers can travel as far as they wish because we are national.

JR PAT Testing is an expanding PAT and Compliance Company currently looking for engineers to join our team in Hampstead. We offer self‑employed positions with flexible hours, allowing interested individuals to work either part‑time or full‑time. This role offers potential earnings on a pro‑rata basis depending on the rate per appliance, the number of tests and job dynamics. A typical day of a Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) engineer:

As a Portable Appliance Testing engineer, no two days are the same. From hospitals to retail outlets, you’ll find yourself in a variety of locations and environments. On a typical day, you start by packing all the necessary tools and equipment—including testers and record books—into your van before setting off to the first job. Once on site, you test all appliances, such as microwaves, kettles and computers that require PAT testing. This involves using various test instruments to check that electrical items are safe for continued use or need to be replaced or repaired. You also inform users of the results and explain why certain appliances may be unfit for use.

After completing all testing, you record findings in a dedicated PAT test report book or onto an electronic system and provide employers with a copy. You may also fill out additional paperwork such as completion certificates and checklists. Throughout the day, you’ll constantly move from one location to another—either alone or as part of a team—so it’s important to stay organised and ensure all tests are completed accurately and efficiently. It takes skill, experience and patience to be successful in this role, but the rewards are great. As a PAT testing engineer, you help keep workplaces safe and develop your own knowledge and expertise.
