JR PAT Testing is growing rapidly across the UK, and we would love to speak with you if you are an experienced PAT Engineer with the equipment and insurance in place. If you are already self-employed or considering becoming self-employed, we would like to hear from you. Our onboarding process starts with a friendly conversation. All our engineers are to have their own insurance and to have their equipment calibrated at least once a year. In return, along with our engineer handbook, contract for services and branded clothing, we supply labels and technical support.

To apply, you must have your transport or means to get to work and equipment, hold a City & Guilds 2377 PAT qualification or equivalent, be reliable and honest, as well as have a ‘can-do’ attitude. All necessary equipment, including testing instruments, measuring devices, and additional tools, must be kept up-to-date, in good working order, and meet relevant regulations.

A typical day of a portable appliance testing (PAT) engineer involves:

  • Packing all necessary tools and equipment into the van before setting off to the first job.
  • Testing appliances such as microwaves, kettles, and computers that require PAT testing.
  • Using various types of test instruments designed to check whether electrical items are safe for continued use or need to be replaced or repaired.
  • Informing users of the results and explaining why certain appliances may be unfit for use.
  • Recording findings in a dedicated PAT test report book or onto an electronic system and providing employers with a copy.
  • Filling out additional paperwork such as completion certificates and checklists.

Throughout the day, you’ll be constantly on the move from one location to another – either alone or part of a team – so it’s important to stay organised and ensure that all tests are completed accurately and efficiently. It takes skill, experience, and patience to be successful in this role but the rewards are great. As a PAT testing engineer, you’ll be helping to keep workplaces safe as well as developing your own knowledge and expertise in the process. Overall, PAT testing is an exciting job that is both physically and mentally demanding, providing plenty of variety and opportunities for advancement.
