Job Purpose

Our client, undergoing a significant company culture change, seeks to add a new role providing leadership across sales, purchasing, category management, and retail operations. The Commercial Director will develop and execute a company-wide commercial strategy, build high-performing teams, and drive growth across product categories and customer segments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Commercial Strategy & Business Growth
    • Develop and implement a commercial strategy aligned with the company's long-term goals.
    • Identify and pursue new business opportunities, including new markets, customer segments, and product innovations.
    • Lead commercial planning, including pricing, promotions, and product lifecycle management.
    • Drive performance in sales teams, trade counters, and key accounts.
    • Set and monitor sales targets, improve conversion rates, and enhance customer retention.
    • Manage strategic accounts and sales pipelines.
  • Retail, Inventory & Category Oversight
    • Oversee category managers to optimize product ranges and supplier relations.
    • Coordinate with Retail Director and Inventory Manager to ensure store performance, stock availability, and cost efficiency.
    • Maintain margin integrity through purchasing, pricing, and inventory control.
  • Cross-functional Alignment
    • Collaborate with Marketing, Operations, Finance, and People & Culture to meet commercial objectives.
    • Provide insights on market trends, competitors, and customer behaviour for strategic planning.
    • Lead and develop direct reports through coaching, goal setting, and performance reviews.
    • Foster a collaborative, customer-focused, and innovative commercial culture.
  • Reporting & Commercial Governance
    • Oversee sales forecasting, budgeting, and reporting.
    • Report monthly to the Managing Director on KPIs, risks, and opportunities.
    • Implement a commercial strategy aligned with business goals.
    • Achieve revenue and margin growth, improve stock availability, and reduce inventory costs.
    • Enhance supplier performance and pricing terms.
    • Increase sales performance across branches and trade counters.
    • Ensure high employee engagement within the commercial team.
    • Align cross-departmentally with business development, operations, and marketing.

  • Proven experience in senior commercial leadership within distribution, trade, or B2B sectors.
  • Strong track record of driving sales and growth.
  • Deep commercial acumen with cross-functional leadership ability.
  • Excellent influencing, coaching, and communication skills.
  • Understanding of regional markets and rural customer needs.
  • Experience in industrial or technical products.
  • Background in retail operations or multi-location sales management.
  • Familiarity with CRM, ERP, and sales analytics tools.
