Thorndon Partners is looking for a Consultant (equivalent to Account Manager level) to join our team of strategic communications advisors. The firm is backed by industry veteran Tim Allan and was established by experienced strategic communications advisor Philip Hall. Our team brings together years of communications and research experience with some of the world’s most influential international organisations, including governments, law firms, foundations, and high-net-worth individuals.

Our work supports initiatives addressing the most critical global issues of our time through high-impact strategic communications (including climate finance, gender equality, strategic litigation, human rights, global regulation, sport and economic issues). We are looking for a consultant with between 3-4 years’ communications experience at agency, in-house, in the public sector or the third sector. The ideal candidate will be a generalist, comfortable getting involved in all aspects of strategic communications, including media and digital relations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Drive communication strategies, campaigns and materials: Support the strategy and execution of communication campaigns, ensuring impactful delivery across platforms including digital. This includes the creation of compelling content, multimedia assets for clients, as well as communications counsel on crisis and issues management as needed.
  • Drafting external communication materials: such as client strategies, messaging, and other digital and media collaterals.
  • Managing research and monitoring: Inform our communication strategies by driving and supporting the development of deliverables such as perception audits, monitoring tools and processes.
  • Manage strategic communications campaigns for Thorndon Partners: Lead the conception and delivery of impactful online campaigns to help grow the firm’s presence.
  • Scenario planning and risk management, including advising clients facing crises playing out in the public domain.
  • Engagement and relationship building: Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including NGOs, government agencies, media, and industry bodies to expand Thorndon Partners' network and influence within the global issues and sustainability sectors.
  • Help shape new business development: By supporting with new business proposals, representing Thorndon Partners at events, drafting thought leadership materials including on digital. You need to be willing to travel to represent the firm at critical events.
  • Innovation in Communications: Stay informed on industry trends and best practices and stay ahead in a dynamic global and changing environment. You will help ensure that the team, in particular more junior members of the team, are aware and equipped to adopt new practices and respond to trends.
  • Lead team culture and development: As part of a new company, take ownership of fostering a collaborative, high-performing, and engaging workplace culture. Identify and lead initiatives in key areas such as training and development, communication tools, employee well-being, and team-building activities.

This role emphasises collaboration across Thorndon’s main practices, which are International Development & Sustainability; Litigation & Disputes; and Research. Our practices work closely together on client briefs, particularly in shared areas of interest such as sports and environmental issues. We are particularly interested in candidates that are curious and eager to learn about new sectors and issues.

Work Culture:

We believe in the value of flexible working arrangements, allowing team members to work remotely and adjust hours as needed. As a start-up agency, we recognize however the importance of in-office collaboration to foster growth and success on this journey and expect reasonable and regular presence in the office (~3 days a week).

Experience & Qualifications:
  • 3-4 years of experience in strategic communications, ideally within a consultancy, agency or relevant sector.
  • Strong background in creating multi-media and digital content and campaign execution is a plus.
  • As a newly established agency, ability to work across disciplines and communication channels is a plus.
  • Non-essential but helpful additional experience and qualifications could include: Languages you are comfortable working in outside of English, Digital expertise, particularly management of social media campaigns, Experience of crisis communications, Experience of using research, polling, online analysis and open-source investigations to inform communications strategies.

Salary will be dependent on experience and competitive within the industry.
