We are seeking an experienced Commodities lawyer to join the Markets Legal team as an Executive Director, providing senior legal coverage to the EMEA Commodities business. This role offers the opportunity to act as a trusted adviser to the business, delivering strategic, commercially focused legal advice across the full spectrum of financial and physical commodities activity. This is a demanding and rewarding opportunity for a seasoned commodities lawyer to engage in high-profile, innovative transactions, partner closely with senior stakeholders, and contribute meaningfully to the strategic development of a growth business.
As an EMEA Commodities Legal Counsel – Markets - Executive Director you will advise on complex legal and regulatory matters relating to commodities-linked financial derivatives, physical commodity trading, and structured commodity financing across energy, metals, and related markets. You will apply sound judgment to assess and manage legal and regulatory risk, translating complexity into clear, practical guidance that supports well-controlled growth in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. As the EMEA platform continues to expand, you will play a key role in shaping the legal framework supporting the business, providing hands-on assistance across transaction structuring, negotiation, and execution.
Working closely with colleagues across the global Commercial & Investment Bank Legal function, you will ensure regional initiatives align with global standards, governance, and control expectations, while remaining responsive to local market practice and regulatory developments.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide senior, strategic legal support to JPMorgan Chase’s financial and physical Commodities business in EMEA, covering a broad range of products and markets including energy, metals, oil, gas, power, emissions, and related commodities activities.
- Partner closely with the business as it develops and expands gas and power capabilities in EMEA, advising on the legal, regulatory, and licensing requirements associated with establishing and operating new activities.
- Lead the legal structuring, negotiation, and execution of complex derivatives, financing, and physical trading transactions, delivering tailored, client-focused solutions while maintaining strong governance and risk discipline.
- Support innovation across the Commodities platform by advising on novel transaction structures, balancing commercial objectives with evolving regulatory frameworks and market practice.
- Negotiate, draft, and oversee key trading documentation, including EFET agreements and bespoke contractual arrangements, ensuring documentation is robust, scalable, and aligned with business strategy and risk appetite.
- Provide subject-matter expertise on applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards, offering clear interpretation and practical guidance to support informed commercial decision-making.
- Collaborate effectively across Markets, Legal, Risk, Compliance, Finance, Operations, and other control and support functions, managing external counsel where appropriate to deliver coordinated and efficient outcomes.
- Proactively identify, assess, and support the management of legal, regulatory, and reputational risks affecting the Commodities business, including monitoring relevant legal developments, supporting governance forums, and escalating issues appropriately.
Required Qualifications, Skills and Capabilities
- Qualified lawyer with 10+ years’ post-qualification experience gained in a leading law firm and/or in-house legal team, ideally within an investment bank or commodities-focused financial institution.
- Strong transactional background with deep experience advising on commodities derivatives, physical trading, and/or structured commodity financing.
- Confident, collaborative team player with the ability to partner effectively with Sales & Trading, senior business stakeholders, Legal colleagues, and control functions at all levels.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear, pragmatic legal advice in a commercial context.
- Highly developed organisational, analytical, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent drafting and negotiation skills.
- Proactive, solutions-oriented mindset, with a demonstrated interest in improving processes, controls, and ways of working.
