The Consultant Speech and Language Therapist acts as the clinical architect of the school's communication strategy, overseeing complex assessments and ensuring that therapeutic interventions are legally compliant and clinically sound. The role bridges high-level clinical expertise and daily classroom practice, providing specialist supervision and evidence-based direction to support children with the most complex communication and trauma-related needs. Communication is often the primary barrier to safety and learning; this role ensures that every childβs Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is accurately delivered and that staff are empowered with the skills to support a Total Communication environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver the core responsibilities of the role to a consistently high standard.
- Take ownership of agreed areas of work and follow tasks through to completion.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Maintain accurate records and follow organisational policies and procedures.
- Contribute to continuous improvement within the team or organisation.
- Providing deep-dive assessments for children who are "stuck" or non-verbal, identifying the exact tools needed to unlock their potential.
- Upskilling the wider school team so that therapeutic support is embedded into every minute of the school day.
- Ensuring SALT strategies are delivered correctly and to a high standard.
- Creating and reviewing communication profiles for each child β detailing key areas of need, support plan and targets.
- Supervising the delivery of support plans and recommended interventions; overseeing and advising on the overarching therapeutic approach as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Relevant experience or qualifications for the role.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to manage workload, prioritise effectively, and meet deadlines.
- Clinical knowledge of AAC.
- Experience with EHCPs and a solid understanding of how to track and report on targets within an Education, Health and Care Plan.
- The ability to give constructive and supportive feedback.
- Deep understanding of neurodivergent communication styles and a knowledge of how to best support rather than correct.
- An in-depth knowledge of trauma informed practice and the skill to prioritise emotional safety of communication targets.
Desirable:
- Experience in a similar environment or sector.
- Additional advanced training or specialist knowledge relevant to the role.
- Previous experience working within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Strong data management and IT skills relevant to the therapeutic remit.
