London Centric is looking to recruit a full-time junior news reporter on an initial fixed-term six-month contract, with the potential for this to be extended.
The role would particularly suit someone early in their journalism career, preferably with some newsroom experience, who is willing to run through walls to get a story and who wants to go straight in at the deep end. You’ll receive a lot of one-on-one training, but will be expected to chase down news tips across London from day one.
About You
Curiosity, work ethic, and an understanding of what makes an interesting London story are the most important qualifications. Formal qualifications are not necessary if you can show evidence of producing quality journalism.
Being able to write engaging and compelling copy is crucial, as is a willingness to knock on doors, pick up the phone, and talk to people.
It’s helpful if you understand what people like to read online and what gets people talking, but there are no traffic targets involved in this job. London Centric’s business model is based on providing paying subscribers with genuinely interesting stories that tell them something they didn’t know about the capital, rather than chasing clicks. We don’t publish a story until it has been thoroughly reported and has been through multiple rounds of edits.
Video editing skills are a bonus, but are not in any sense a requirement.
Details and How To Apply
The pay is benchmarked above equivalent roles on national newspapers.
If you’re interested, please send a short bio or CV, plus links to three pieces of journalism you have produced. Please don’t waste your time writing a lengthy covering letter. A very short note about why you’d like the job would be great.
There is no hard deadline for applications, but we are looking to make a quick appointment. As a result, the best time to apply is today.
London Centric is a small start-up and we won’t be able to have pre-application coffees with applicants or reply to messages about this job at the initial recruitment stage. Please do not take it personally if we are unable to respond to every application on an individual basis.
The ideal start date is late August or September. If you’re interested, please email jobs@londoncentric.media.
Please mention Journo Resources when you apply, it really helps us out.
