Overview

Applications Now Open For The 2025 Journo Resources Fellowships

September 2, 2025 (Updated September 17, 2025)

The Journo Resources team is thrilled to announce the return of our fellowship for 2025, our fifth year of running the scheme. Ahead of our 10th anniversary in 2026, we hope to welcome our biggest cohort yet — so, if you’re an organisation hoping to make a difference to the future of the industry, please get in touch.

The Journo Resources Fellowship Programme, originally launched during the pandemic, aims to support emerging journalists to take their first steps in the industry, providing fellows with a paid commission, in-depth editor support, training sessions, and six months of bespoke one-to-one mentoring.

The fellowship is open to anyone aged 18 and over who is currently living in the UK or the Republic of Ireland; there are no age cut-offs and no required qualifications. The only prerequisite is that if you are studying a full-time course, you must have less than one year left of study. This is because the scheme is specifically designed to support you into journalism employment — something we’re proud to say some 90 per cent of our fellows go on to do, at outlets including The Guardian, Journo Resources, The Financial Times, Newsquest, the BBC, PinkNews, and many more.

What you need to know before you apply

  • We never close applications early and we read every application. Take your time to think about your entry and spend the time getting it right. We would rather you were well-prepared than rushed! We give feedback to all applicants on request and there is no interview process for this fellowship.
  • Eligibility for this specific scheme:
    • You must be based in the UK;
    • You must be over the age of 18 at the time the fellowship commences on September 30;
    • You must not currently have regular paid work in journalism, such as a part- or full-time job;
    • If you are still studying, you must have no more than one year remaining as part of your studies.
  • This scheme is a six-month commitment, with fellows expected to complete the whole programme. This will include at least six webinars, six mentoring calls, and one piece for the Journo Resources website. The whole scheme is entirely virtual.
  • Fellows will be announced publicly via the Journo Resources website and social media, including your name, photo, and a short biography.
  • Fellows will be paid on completion of their agreed piece for the website.
  • We’d really love you to apply.

Application components

  • A mentor’s support paragraph about your entry (the quote in the original text is part of the testimonial and kept here for context).
  • An idea you would like to write for our website:
    • TIP: This must be a story that works for Journo Resources — we cover the journalism industry and issues that affect journalists, so your story must be appropriate for this. For 2025, we’re looking for deep dive pieces and long reads that tap into topical issues across the industry.
    • TIP: You can see what our past fellows have written here, but try to find a new angle that fits our style or a way to move the story on. As a small team, we prioritise new ideas, as we have a limited capacity for coverage.
    • TIP: We really want to hear from people who are marginalised or underrepresented and want to hear your stories — but please don’t feel bound to writing about your identity. We want all your ideas, whatever they’re about.
    • TIP: While the written word is our primary format, we’re also open to other ideas. For example, some previous fellows have published photo essays and used audio clips.
    • TIP: Think about how your story will end up looking — and what voices might go into it.
  • A link to up to two things you have written or recorded;
    • TIP: This doesn’t have to be a professional piece of work! Student media, a self-published blog, or even an essay is fine. We’re not worried about big bylines.
    • TIP: Please don’t send us a portfolio site or author page — please pick out two pieces.
  • Up to 150 words on why you want to be a journalist;
  • Up to 150 words on why you want to join the scheme and how it will help you.
    • TIP: For both of these questions, try to use the full space available to you so we can get to know you and what you want to achieve.
    • TIP: Be honest in these answers; while we do want to know what you’ve achieved, we want to honestly hear about your experiences.

In your application, you will also be asked to share your LinkedIn profile. If you do not have an account, we will also accept a link to another social media page or a portfolio website. We are unable to accept CVs.

Journo Resources does not use generative AI tools in any of its writing, content creation, or job review processes. We believe that the reason we have grown as a community is through genuine human connection and stories. At least three people will read every application in full to give your application the fair consideration it deserves. In return, we ask that you do not use AI tools to write your application, aside from the use of spellcheckers.

Applications to the scheme close at 11.59pm on September 21, 2025. Please submit your application using the form below.

Everyone who applies can request to receive personal feedback, but we are unable to accept late submissions. Questions should be directed to hello@journoresources.org.uk or our social media accounts — we will try to answer questions as soon as possible, but we’re a tiny part-time team, so please be kind!

Reach Plc, the UK’s largest commercial, national, and regional news publisher, joins the Journo Resources Fellowship for 2025, supporting three places.

Its support is focused on journalists who are based outside London and the team hopes to offer additional connections, mentoring, and opportunities to our fellows.

The Daniel Phelan Trust has supported the Journo Resources Fellowship for several years now. The charity aims to bring more diverse voices into the media by inspiring young people from underrepresented communities.

Andy Extance, chair of the ABSW, said: “The Association of British Science Writers always tries hard to enable people from underrepresented backgrounds to enter the profession. It therefore made total sense for us to support the Journo Resources Fellowship.”

Newsworks is the marketing body for the UK’s national news publishers and returns to support the fellowship for the third year running. Newsworks champions the importance of a free press and leads collaboration across the industry to support the future for trusted journalism.

Why? Because for readers. For society. For brands. Journalism matters. More now than ever.

Women in Journalism return to once again support the Journo Resources fellowship. The membership organisation supports women across the UK to reach their full potential and manage their careers.
