Alakat Publishing is a B2B trade publisher that currently produces the UK toy industry’s leading monthly trade magazine, a news website which is updated daily, and a website focused on the licensing industry.
We’re looking for an Assistant Editor to join our editorial team. A flair for writing and excellent subbing skills are essential, and experience of B2B/trade press would be welcome.
About The Role
As part of the experienced Alakat Publishing team, this is a fantastic opportunity to join a market-leading publication and website. We’re well known for our professionalism and expertise in the toy industry and operate as a close-knit team, so flexibility, reliability and a willingness to learn quickly and adapt to whatever is needed would be ideal skills to bring to the role. Support will be given, but some ability to work independently is expected.
We work from premises in Hemel Hempstead, Herts. Please note our location as this is an office-based position and may not be undertaken on a freelance or remote basis due to the nature of the business — much of the work is to fixed schedules and is time sensitive and collaborative. We’re looking for someone to start as soon as possible, and you’ll need to be comfortable working in an office environment and live nearby — or be ready to relocate by your start date.
Our office is located in a co-working building which has excellent facilities, including a coffee shop and a complimentary shuttle to Hemel Hempstead railway station. All staff are eligible for a complimentary gym membership at a nearby health club.
The role…
- is a full-time, hands-on editorial position, involving work in both print and digital environments. A professional standard of writing and subbing is a must, as is an aptitude for online systems and some administrative expertise.
- Journalistic writing experience is desirable; the role will suit a candidate who has training in print journalism (NCTJ accredited qualification preferred), and/or relevant concrete experience for a commercial organisation, along with a natural flair for the written word, good communication skills and the ability to work to deadlines.
- We’re looking for a motivated and dynamic applicant, who can produce copy for our daily online newsfeed service, as well as both short form and long form content for our print publication, and other writing tasks and projects as required.
- Our workload can be demanding, so requires a reliable and confident individual. Naturally, a high standard of grammatical accuracy and attention to detail, and the ability to adapt tone of content to house style, is expected. The role will involve liaising with clients, chasing copy, using in house administrative systems, subbing press releases, both creating content from supplied material and generating original content, interviewing industry professionals, uploading copy and images to the company’s online platforms and distributing content across social media. A confident telephone/video call manner and strong interpersonal skills are vital, and knowledge of systems such as WordPress, Mailchimp and Photoshop would be helpful.
- Naturally, you’ll be working with the other editorial staff, plus sales and design colleagues to collectively maintain the high standards our publication has become known for. Occasional travel within the UK may be involved to visit clients or attend important events in the trade show calendar, sometimes staying away overnight.
- Every member of our close-knit team is vital, and a sociable nature, enthusiasm, loyalty and flexibility are expected.
- This is a full-time, permanent role. Salary is DOE and will be determined after the interview stage but is expected to be in the region of £26,000pa.
