About the role

As a Park Assistant at Homestead Park and Pavilion, you will play an important role in helping to create a welcoming, safe and restorative environment for all visitors. This is a predominantly outdoor role where you will gain hands-on experience in basic gardening and nature conservation tasks. You will also support events held in the park, including setting up spaces and assisting with clearing and tidying afterwards. This position offers a valuable opportunity to explore different career paths or make a fresh start, while gaining practical experience that can support progression into our paid garden apprenticeship scheme.

Day-to-day, you will engage with visitors, offering a friendly welcome and answering questions, while helping to maintain the park’s appearance through litter picking and bin emptying. You will be responsible for opening and securing gates and buildings when required, carrying out routine safety and cleanliness checks and ensuring the Pavilion Community Space is well stocked with refreshments and supplies. In addition, you will work closely with the garden team to communicate ongoing tasks and report any issues that arise. Above all, you will act as an advocate for the park, promoting it as a place where people can relax, connect with nature and build a sense of community.

About you

We are looking for a motivated and adaptable individual with a positive attitude who is ready to take on a variety of tasks and try new things. The role requires someone who can work well as part of a team, as two general assistants will be on duty each weekend, supported by an experienced gardener, while also being confident working independently when needed and following instructions from the gardening team.

Strong communication skills are essential, along with good timekeeping and personal organisation. You will need to be willing to take responsibility for important safety checks and maintain high standards in your work. Flexibility is also important, as the role includes working weekends and occasional evenings on a rota basis, typically following a pattern of two weekends on duty and one weekend off, with some scope for flexibility depending on operational needs. You will also be expected to offer availability for up to one evening per week to support community events.
