The firm uniquely integrates the expertise of leading solicitors and barristers, as well as specialist accountants and data scientists, to provide comprehensive solutions to complex legal challenges. We have an international client base that ranges from ultra-high net worth individuals and trusts to publicly listed blue-chip companies, foreign government entities and the world’s largest funds.
Our Contentious Tax team comprises renowned practitioners and leading barristers advising large corporates and high net worth individuals and family offices on a range of complex enquiries and active litigation at all levels from the FTT to the Supreme Court.
We are looking for an ambitious and bright Contentious Tax Associate to join our busy legal practice. We encourage applications from barristers at the independent bar as well as solicitors in established law firms. This is a fantastic role for a self-motivated and autonomous litigator, who may be seeking a different environment than the usual large corporate law firm, or to move away from the independent bar. You will work closely with fee earners at all levels within our established commercial litigation team. The level of responsibility and exposure to high-level work is unusually high at JHA.
Key Responsibilities
- Advising clients on a broad range of tax disputes and investigations.
- Assisting on various appeals to the FTT, Upper Tribunal and Court of Appeal.
- Drafting notes and opinions, interviewing witnesses, drafting witness statements, preparing evidence, drafting applications, pleadings, correspondence etc.
- Providing excellent standards of client care, in a professional and pleasant manner.
- Building rapport and maintaining good working relationships with colleagues, clients, and external organisations.
- Producing consistent, accurate and high-quality work.
- Showing a willingness to be involved, driven by the desire to learn and continuously to develop yourself.
Qualifications & Experience
- Strong academic qualifications from a highly regarded university (or equivalent).
- Trained and qualified as a barrister or solicitor in the United Kingdom, ideally between 3-5 years’ Call/PQE.
- Experience in tax litigation and contentious tax matters.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, organisation skills, and attention to detail.
- Desire to be part of a forward-thinking, fast-paced and dynamic firm.
- Proactive with a hands-on attitude and an enthusiasm for engaging in a wide breadth of duties.
