About the Role:

JLL Rating is seeking an experienced Rating professional to join our 55-strong team of dedicated business rates specialists operating across our UK office network. This role focuses on delivering specialist Investor/Developer business rates advice to clients across London and the South East. Our Rating team advises on and manages business rates liabilities for leading property investors and developers, delivering industry-leading technical advice while maintaining strong, trusted client relationships. Depending on your level of experience, this role combines expert technical delivery with varying degrees of responsibility for client leadership, team mentorship, and business development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Client Service & Relationship Management
    • Deliver exceptional business rates advisory services to Investor and Developer clients
    • Schedule and conduct regular client update meetings, providing clear strategic guidance
    • Prepare accurate, timely client reports detailing portfolio performance and opportunities
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and across the wider JLL team
    • Identify opportunities for additional services and cross-selling within client relationships
    • At senior levels: Lead key client relationships and strategic account development
  • Technical Delivery
    • Inspect properties and accurately measure buildings for business rates valuation purposes
    • Review client business rate demands and refunds with precision
    • Identify and action rate-saving opportunities across client portfolios
    • Prepare high-quality submissions to the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) to challenge and reduce liabilities where appropriate
    • Manage Check, Challenge and Appeal processes through to Valuation Tribunal, including case presentation
    • Develop and implement strategies to optimize vacancy-related business rates positions
    • At senior levels: Provide technical leadership and quality assurance across complex mandates
  • Business Development & Team Contribution
    • Actively contribute to growing our Investor/Developer client base
    • Support team members and collaborate effectively to deliver comprehensive client solutions
    • Contribute to achieving client satisfaction and JLL Rating financial targets
    • Manage workload, diary, inspections, and expenses efficiently and independently
    • Liaise with other JLL teams and external professionals to provide integrated client service
    • At Associate/Director level: Lead business development initiatives, mentor junior team members, and contribute to strategic team direction

Essential Requirements:

  • Qualifications & Experience
    • RICS qualified Chartered Surveyor with commercial practice surveying background (corporate, public sector, or private practice)
    • Post-qualification experience working within a Rating team, with depth of experience appropriate to the level you're applying for
    • Current, demonstrable technical competence in business rates advisory work
    • Up-to-date knowledge of business rates legislation and ability to apply it to develop client recommendations
    • At Surveyor/Senior Surveyor level: Experience working in a Rating team focusing on delivery of client work and ability to undertake business development, either directly or supporting the team
    • At Associate/Director level: Proven track record in client leadership, business development, and technical excellence; established market profile, strategic thinking capability, and demonstrated leadership or mentoring experience
  • Technical Skills
    • Proficiency with core business applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, MS Teams)
    • Experience with rating-specific systems (e.g., Riverlake, Analyse, Rates Data, Experian Goad, CalcuRate)
  • Professional Competencies
    • Strong relationship-building skills with clients and internal stakeholders
    • Excellent written and verbal communication, with particular strength in report writing
    • Effective presentation skills for client meetings and Valuation Tribunal proceedings
    • Professional, articulate telephone manner
    • Collaborative team player who recognizes and supports colleagues' contributions
    • Commercial awareness with ability to identify business development opportunities
    • At senior levels: Demonstrated leadership, mentoring ability, and strategic thinking
