We are looking for an Engineer to join our team on major UK construction projects, starting at our Berwick Bank construction project at Innerwick, near Edinburgh. The role is site-based and involves working on projects across the UK, reporting directly to the Project Manager. The successful candidate will support the management and delivery of civil engineering projects, working within a flexible organisation that values self-motivated, practical problem solvers. You’ll be expected to travel with overnight stays required depending on site location. What You'll Be Doing:
- Technical & Project Delivery:
- Carry out surveying, setting out, and volume checks in a timely manner and in accordance with specifications.
- Interpolate ground investigation (GI) data, designs, and specifications to produce accurate quantities and earthworks phasing 3D models.
- Manage machine control setup and operation, including 3D modelling and ensuring on-site accuracy.
- Ensure compliance with testing frequencies based on actual earthwork volumes and maintain excellent communication with QA and project management teams.
- Monitor earthworks progress, accurately reporting weekly volumes to senior management.
- Interpret engineering drawings and specifications to ensure construction meets client requirements.
- Provide accurate information to the Works Management to ensure timely project execution.
- Prepare and submit weekly progress reports for review, contributing to financial CVRs and completion forecasts.
- Assist in ensuring adequate plant, labour, subcontractor, and material resources are available to meet project timescales.
- Support the procurement process, ensuring timely payment of suppliers and subcontractors, and monitor their performance, including financial aspects.
- Identify potential problem areas and their financial impact, ensuring provisions are made within forecasts.
- Assist in resolving contractual issues with clients and suppliers while maintaining good relationships.
- Safety, Quality, & Environmental Compliance:
- Ensure all activities are completed safely, adhering to health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
- Assist in preparing quality, environmental, and H&S construction plans.
- Innovation & Team Development:
- Support and promote innovation and new technology related to earthwork operations.
- Mentor apprentice engineers to foster career progression and improve skill levels.
What We're Looking For:
- Qualifications & Experience:
- Degree or HND in Civil Engineering.
- Minimum of 4-5 years' site experience in roads, drainage, earthworks, and reinforced concrete.
- Strong leadership skills and demonstrable experience in a similar role.
- Experience in mentoring junior engineers.
- Technical Skills:
- Excellent knowledge of Topcon/Trimble/Leica machine control, including setup and calibrations.
- Competent in surveying and setting out techniques using GPS and Total Stations.
- Strong computer literacy with experience using Microsoft Office, CAD, and LSS surveying packages.
- Commercial awareness with good negotiation and influencing skills.
- Personal Attributes:
- Attention to detail, ensuring maximum accuracy.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to adapt communication style to suit different situations.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Capable of interpreting technical instructions and dealing with abstract variables.
- Able to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel and work on UK-based sites (overnight stays may be required).
- Commitment, reliability, and a flexible approach to tasks and travel.
