Jones Bros Ruthin (Civil Engineering) Co. Ltd are looking for an experienced Mobile Plant Fitter based in Milton Keynes/Northampton to join our team, supporting civil engineering projects located in Milton Keynes/Northampton as well as across the wider UK by providing site/project based technical support. This is a key role within our plant maintenance team, offering long-term career development and the opportunity to contribute to major infrastructure works.
The Role
- Mobile Plant Fitters at Jones Bros play a vital role in supporting the smooth operation of our civil engineering projects by maintaining and repairing a wide range of mobile plant, crushing, and screening machinery and equipment.
- They are responsible for diagnosing faults, carrying out repairs, and conducting regular maintenance checks on construction vehicles and plant, including excavators, bulldozers, dump trucks, rollers, and crushing and screening equipment.
- Fitters work closely with Site Agents, Works Managers, Engineers, and Plant Co-ordinators to minimise downtime and ensure safe, efficient project delivery.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Carry out routine maintenance checks on plant machinery to ensure optimal performance and compliance with safety regulations.
- Diagnose faults and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Undertake repairs and replacement of components such as engines, transmissions, braking systems, and hydraulics.
- Keep accurate records of maintenance and repair work completed, including parts used and hours worked.
- Respond promptly to machinery breakdowns and emergency repair requirements, both on-site and at depots.
- Work collaboratively with Plant Co-ordinators, Site Agents, and Works Managers to prioritise and plan maintenance tasks.
- Comply at all times with health and safety legislation and company procedures.
- Maintain a clean, tidy, and organised working environment, including mobile service vehicles and any workshop areas.
- Offer basic instruction and support to plant operators on the safe and effective use of machinery.
- Support depot-based plant teams during fleet maintenance, mobilisation, and decommissioning.
What We Are Looking For
- Proven experience as a plant fitter, mobile service engineer, or similar, ideally within the construction or civil engineering sector.
- Strong technical knowledge of heavy plant, diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
- Relevant trade qualifications such as NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Plant Maintenance (or equivalent).
- Ability to work independently and under pressure in a fast‑paced, site-based environment.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and a methodical approach.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working effectively with site teams.
- Full UK driving licence and flexibility to travel between project sites when required.
