As a Reaction Hazards Chemist, you will evaluate the safety properties and operating envelopes of JM’s materials including Platinum Group Metal (PGM) complexes, catalysts and processes. This is a hands-on role which will involve setting up a reaction hazards laboratory including calorimetry methods, thermal analysis, and dust testing. Subsequently, you will carry out such reaction hazard testing in support of JM’s businesses; and advising businesses as to what testing is required and aiding with the interpretation and application of the data. This role would welcome someone with knowledge of hazards testing within a controlled lab environment.

The role:

  • To provide support to businesses, JMTC and potentially customers in reaction process safety: consultancy on required testing.
  • Undertake reaction hazard testing, (such as calorimetry, thermal analysis, dust testing) in support of JMs sites, businesses and potential customers.
  • To collaborate with JM businesses (operating sites and technology) and JMTC on specific projects, helping to identify the relevant testing and support in interpretation of the results.
  • Develop in house methods where standard tests do not adequately cover the process or are not easily applicable to JMs process chemistries, frequently involving the evaluation of PGM-based chemistries.
  • Build the business case where bringing further equipment and experimental methods in-house would be beneficial to JM.
  • Collaborate with wider JMTC to provide additional insight into process safety.

Key skills/qualifications that will help you succeed in this role:

  • Degree in chemistry (or related discipline).
  • Good understanding of PGM chemistry (Desirable).
  • Good understanding of reaction chemistry.
  • Laboratory experience.
  • Experience of Operating equipment such as: Differential scanning calorimetry, Thermal gravimetric analysis, Carius tube, isothermal calorimetry, Hartman tube equipment, Godbert Greenwald oven.
  • Experience in reaction kinetics (Desirable).
  • Experience in reaction hazards and/or process safety.
