Hydraulic Instrument Technician – Workshop Based

Role focus: Mechanical service, repairs, and testing

Location: Wymondham

Are you an experienced hydraulic technician with a passion for precision engineering, hands-on mechanical work, and solving complex technical challenges? We’re looking for someone who thrives in a workshop environment, enjoys fault-finding, and takes pride in delivering high-quality hydraulic system repairs and builds.

About the Role

Based in our dedicated Hydraulic Service Bay, you’ll carry out the maintenance, repair, testing, and assembly of small hydraulic control systems used across the oil and gas industry. Your work will play a key role in extending the operational life of our customers’ well head control equipment.

Typical activities include:

  • Diagnosing faults on hydraulic control systems and preparing repair scopes
  • Replacing components, performing mechanical repairs, and conducting full functional testing
  • Building and testing new or refurbished hydraulic control systems
  • Completing all documentation and certification to industry standards
  • Working closely with our service office team to support quotations and customer communication

Key Technical Responsibilities

You’ll have experience in the manufacture, assembly, and testing of systems such as:

  • Hydraulic Power Units (HPUs)
  • Well Head Control Panels (WHCPs)
  • Topside Termination Units (TUTUs)
  • Chemical Injection packages
  • Fire Suppression & Deluge Control units

Core skills include:

  • Identifying, installing, and assembling hydraulic components
  • Fault-finding and modifying existing hydraulic systems
  • Reading and interpreting P&IDs, GA drawings, parts lists, and test procedures
  • Working with instrument tubing and twin-ferrule systems (Swagelok, Parker, Gyrolok/Hoke)
  • Medium and high-pressure cone & thread systems (Autoclave, Butech)
  • Pipework manufacture, including NPT threading
  • Pressure testing of tube and pipe systems
  • Hydraulic flushing and cleanliness sampling (SAE AS4059, NAS 1638)
  • Instrument testing and calibration (PRVs, transmitters, switches, gauges)
  • Safe setup and operation of hydraulic test rigs
  • General workshop machining and fabrication
  • TIG welding in 316 stainless steel (advantageous but not essential)

  • Can occasionally travel for on-site work when required
  • Has an understanding of electrical control systems (advantageous)

Qualifications & Training

Ideal candidates will have:

  • A Mechanical Craft or Technician Apprenticeship
  • Level 3 NVQ in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering (Fitting & Assembly)
  • Relevant hydraulic and fluid power training units

Additional training/certifications that are highly valued:

  • Swagelok / Parker / Hoke twin-ferrule systems
  • Autoclave / Butech high-pressure systems
  • ecITB SBT01 & SBT02
  • PAMAS contamination control
  • Hand torque bolting techniques

Beneficial certifications:

  • Forklift Truck licence
  • First Aid at Work
  • Fire Marshall training
