Overview
The General Foreman reports to the Contracts Manager and collaborates closely with the Quantity Surveyor. They manage the onsite programme, ensuring timely delivery, high workmanship standards and strict safety compliance. The General Foreman secures adequate labour, plant, materials and subcontractor resources to meet contract requirements and align with company policies.
Responsibilities
- Establish and monitor key stage programmes.
- Set up the site and maintain site security (maintain site hutting, hoardings and signboards to present a tidy and professional appearance).
- Take possession of the site, plan and coordinate trades activities.
- Apply for temporary service connections.
- Interpret drawings and specifications, communicating directions to site personnel, subcontractors and suppliers.
- Ensure that adequate method statements and risk assessments (RAs) are completed for high‑risk activities.
- Request outstanding information from the professional team and confirm all verbal instructions.
- Assist in securing all necessary approvals to allow the project to progress without risk (e.g., hoarding licence).
- Review buildability and identify methods of construction that offer commercial or programme advantages where possible.
- Work with the Environmental Coordinator to implement environmental controls and pursue objectives set out in the HSE plan.
- Attend site meetings, subcontractor and internal meetings; maintain and circulate notes and action points.
Experience
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to interact with colleagues, clients and third parties in a warm, persuasive, and adaptable manner.
- Minimum ten years of proven experience within a construction management environment, preferably with a national or regional contractor.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Organised with good time‑management and capable of proactive planning.
- Solid experience in Civils and FRC.
Qualifications
- First Aid at Work certificate.
- IOSH or equivalent H&S management training.
- Temporary Works & Excavation Safety certification.
- Permitting requirements for live energy works (must be in conjunction with Site & Safety Management).
- Working at Heights & Scaffolding certification.
- Lifting & Cranage operations certification.
- Other HSE/QS training as per site HSE plan.
