About the role
We're looking for a highly experienced and creative Furniture designer to join our team, designing and developing our own brand products including cabinetry, freestanding furniture and upholstery.
Key responsibilities
- Create the individual category design strategy, ensuring it is aligned to the overall strategic direction and providing insight into your area of Own Brand products.
- Lead the design and development of original, customer‑centric, best‑in‑class own‑brand products, using customer insights to inspire, excite and delight customers, and contributing to the planned growth of Own Brand categories.
- Design and manage more complex products or design briefs within the category, working independently or collaboratively with the wider Design and Commercial community.
- Conduct trend research and forecasting, present relevant category trends to the team, and ensure the sampling and production process is efficient and accurate.
- Produce precise design packs and fulfil seasonal design briefs with commercial and innovative solutions, supporting material sourcing and detailed specifications.
- Collaborate with buying, merchandising, and technical teams to co‑create briefs, deliver outcomes, and maintain alignment with brand guidelines.
- Build and maintain strong supplier relationships, co‑create designs, and manage cost, prototyping, and production communications.
- Guide and mentor a high‑performance Design team, including People Management for L8 Designers and Assistant Designers, fostering a collaborative culture, supporting professional development, and providing coaching and feedback.
- Lead projects, category collections, and sub‑brands, setting clear direction, managing ambition, and ensuring alignment with business outcomes and customer voice.
Essential skills & experience
- Ability to translate design concepts into production‑ready designs and technical specifications using 3D modelling software such as SolidWorks, Rhino, KeyShot.
- Experience in stakeholder management, excellent communication and presentation skills, and experience leading and motivating a design team.
- Strong understanding of the retail home market, including trends, consumer behaviour, and competitive landscape.
- Commercial and customer focus with a proven ability to convert trends into commercially viable designs.
- Excellent knowledge of product construction, key materials, construction techniques, and commercial manufacturing constraints.
- Track record of credible creative achievements and familiarity with the JL&P brand and/or sub‑brands.
Desirable skills & experience
- Experience in People Management and a passion for developing leadership skills.
- Ability to switch between strategic creative thinking and guiding product design & development of a team.
- BA degree in Design (product, furniture) and substantial experience within a product design studio.
- External network across the design industry.
Details
- Location: London Head Office campus in Pimlico (London, SW1V 2QQ). Hybrid working approach – approximately 3 days a week in the office, with flexibility for home‑based work as needed.
- Travel: Any cost incurred as a result of travel to the office is the responsibility of the successful candidate. No travel allowance will be provided for this role.
- Contract type: Permanent.
- Hours of work: 35 hours per week.
- Job level: Partnership Level 6.
- Pay: £57,400.00 – £86,200.00 per annum.
