Overview

ABOUT THE ROLE Our Engineering practice includes 80+ teams, working on everything from Cloud Platforms to Mobile Apps, from E-Commerce functionality to Machine Learning. At the heart of engineering excellence at JLP, our Technical Product Manager will be working as part of the Engineering Profession on assignment within our Cloud Infrastructure and Platforms team. You will initially be working in a team to ensure that we are building a Cloud Platform that is flexible, reliable and secure to meet the needs of the internal product teams which build and run business applications on it. This will require building relationships with key stakeholders and working with the Delivery & Operations Manager, Engineering & Architecture Professions and Head of Platforms to lead the development of the platform product in a way that aligns with our strategy and ambition.

What you’ll be doing

We are modernising our Infrastructure moving to Google Cloud and establishing a number of key Platforms that will be the foundation for the future of the John Lewis Partnership. We are migrating much of our existing on-premises infrastructure services to cloud and SaaS solutions providing a modern Platform(s) on which newly formed Product teams can flourish. The Technical Product Manager role will enable you over time to work across a number of different technical products and Platforms. You will help shape how the assignment works within the Partnership, working within a small existing community. The capability will be essential as we modernise our existing estate, develop Platform thinking, to ensure our application and technical estate.

You will have:

  • Experience in Google Cloud – awareness of its strengths, core products and how they can be used effectively
  • Knowledge of good platform engineering practices – why it matters and how it can be an accelerator for Engineers
  • The ability to work collaboratively with engineering teams
  • Advanced interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence leaders and collaborate effectively with individuals outside of your immediate sphere, building lasting and productive relationships
  • A passion for innovation and change, with experience leading initiatives that drive transformative, secure engineering practices
  • A commitment to continuous learning and staying updated on the latest cloud, infrastructure and security trends and industry developments
  • People Manager experience – option to join the People Management community and manage people though no requirement in role
  • Deliver value for John Lewis Partnership by ensuring quality, efficiency and cost effectiveness from all infrastructure management contracts
  • Good commercial, delivery and operational acumen, demonstrating knowledge and hands-on experience in building positive relationships, including third parties
  • FinOps experience: Budgeting/Forecasting/Cost Optimisation

Essential Skills

  • Technical experience within one or more Cloud Providers, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure or/and Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Technical Product Management experience building a secure, self-service administrative capability for Cloud Platforms
  • Experience of building a clear vision, Product roadmap – working with key stakeholders and ability to articulate the value of what is being built
  • Extensive knowledge of the development lifecycle and Continuous Delivery and Operability best practices
  • Ability to work within a small team and influence key stakeholders to deliver the Product Roadmap
  • Collaboration with wider teams including Architecture, Engineering, Security, FinOps, Service Management and Infrastructure to define technical requirements, solve issues and develop new product features
