This role is responsible for identifying commercial opportunities across pricing, promotion and secondary space to support revenue, profit and customer value delivery. Using insight and analysis, the analyst will make recommendations that help maintain a strong customer value proposition whilst supporting Waitrose’s commercial and competitive objectives. The role will work closely with Commercial, Trade Planning and Category teams to identify performance opportunities, evaluate customer and competitor activity, and support data‑led decision making across short and long‑term trading priorities.

Key Responsibilities
- Identify and deliver pricing and promotional opportunities that improve sales, margin, competitiveness, and customer value perception across defined categories or commercial areas.
- Monitor competitor pricing, promotional activity, and market trends to recommend commercially effective pricing actions and protect market position.
- Use analytical modelling, including elasticity, pricing architecture, and performance analysis, to support data‑led commercial decision making and optimise profitability.
- Translate complex commercial and customer data into clear, concise recommendations and presentations for senior stakeholders and leadership teams.
- Own delivery of accurate, commercially robust pricing and promotional analysis, ensuring recommendations are actionable, governed, and operationally executable across systems and processes.
- Deliver high‑quality pricing and promotional analysis to identify opportunities that improve customer value perception, sales, profit, and overall market competitiveness.
- Own delivery of pricing and promotional analysis across defined categories, missions, or commercial workstreams, ensuring recommendations are commercially robust, customer‑led, and actionable.
- Monitor competitor pricing, promotional mechanics, market movements, and category trends to identify risks, opportunities, and required commercial actions.

- Challenge existing pricing and promotional approaches using insight, modelling, and market analysis to improve commercial performance and customer perception.
- Maintain and develop pricing architecture across categories, ensuring clear Good/Better/Best positioning, logical price ladders, and alignment to category strategy and competitive benchmarks.
- Analyse the relationship between price, promotion, secondary space, and customer demand to understand sales outcomes and optimise commercial decision making.
- Apply analytical modelling techniques, including elasticity and scenario analysis, to evaluate commercial trade‑offs, forecast impact, and recommend optimal pricing actions.
- Identify opportunities to generate incremental sales, margin, and volume through pricing, promotional, and value‑led initiatives, with clear articulation of expected commercial outcomes and associated risks.
- Balance short‑term commercial performance with long‑term customer price perception and strategic category positioning.
- Produce clear, concise, and commercially focused insight packs and presentations for senior stakeholders and leadership teams, translating complex analysis into actionable recommendations.
- Execute pricing and promotional recommendations using multiple analytical and retail systems, ensuring strong governance, operational accuracy, and pace of delivery.
- Build and maintain reporting, tracking, modelling, and analytical outputs using advanced Excel capability and other analytical tools and software packages.
- Work cross‑functionally with Commercial, Finance, Category, Insights, and Operational teams to influence decision making and gain alignment on pricing and promotional strategies.
- Maintain a strong understanding of customer behaviour, category dynamics, market trends, and competitor positioning to support strategic and tactical commercial decisions.
- Support continuous improvement of pricing, promotional, and analytical processes to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of commercial decision making.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Advanced Excel capability, including large dataset management, complex formulas, pivots, modelling, scenario analysis, and data interpretation.
- Strong commercial and numerical acumen with the ability to translate analysis into clear, actionable commercial recommendations.
- Experience working within retail pricing, promotions, category analytics, commercial analytics, or revenue optimisation environments.
- Strong understanding of pricing principles, elasticity, competitor positioning, customer behaviour, and promotional effectiveness.
- Experience using analytical and visualisation tools such as Excel, Power BI, Tableau, pricing optimisation software, or equivalent commercial systems.
- Ability to work across multiple data sources and software platforms to deliver commercially focused insight and recommendations.
- Strong presentation and communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex analysis and influence stakeholders at all levels, including senior leadership.
- High attention to detail, strong analytical problem‑solving capability, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced commercial environment.
