We are looking for a qualified Vehicle Technician for our Suzuki dealership in Bury St Edmunds. If you already hold an MOT Tester licence, so much the better. If you do not, we will pay for you to get one and pay you £500 when you do.
About us
John Banks Group has sites across East Anglia and has been looking after customers for over fifty years. Bury St Edmunds is a Honda and Suzuki site and we also service, repair and MOT all makes, so the work is varied — warranty diagnostics one hour, a customer’s Ford in for an MOT and a brake job the next. The workshop is properly equipped, the diagnostic kit is current, and there is an experienced Parts team and Workshop Control behind you so you can get on with the job. It is a settled team. Several of our technicians have been with us for years, which tells you more about the place than any advert can.
What you would be doing
- Servicing, maintenance and repair across Suzuki and all makes
- MOT testing to DVSA standard
- Diagnostics and fault finding — getting to the root of a fault, not just clearing the code
- Mechanical and electrical repair: brakes, steering, suspension, timing belts, clutches, air conditioning and engine work
- Warranty repair to manufacturer standard, documented so the claim is right first time
- An electronic Vehicle Health Check on every qualifying job, with video, and your own written report of what you found
- Preparation of Approved Used vehicles
- Road testing where required
What you need
- Level 3 NVQ or equivalent in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, or time-served experience to that standard
- A full, clean UK driving licence
- Franchised dealership or good independent workshop experience
- Confident with diagnostic equipment
- An MOT Tester licence is welcome but not essential — we will fund it
- Suzuki experience is welcome but not required. Full manufacturer training is provided.
What we pay
- Basic salary — Graded upon experience as a Technician holding an MOT Tester licence. Where you sit in the pay band is set by your qualifications and experience, and it is reviewed as you progress.
- Team bonus - paid monthly
- Time saved bonus — On top of the team bonus, and this one is yours alone. Every hour you sell above the hours you attend pays £10, and the rate climbs with your productivity — £11 at 110%, £12 at 120%, up to £16. The better you are, the more every hour is worth.
- Qualification payments — For discussion
- Overtime — Available and paid, never assumed.
Where it leads
There is a defined route from Technician to Senior and Diagnostic Technician and on to Master Technician, with the pay band moving at every step and the training paid for — including hybrid, EV and high voltage. We would always rather promote than recruit.
Benefits
- 22 days holiday plus bank holidays, rising to 26 days with length of service
- Auto-enrolment pension scheme
- Death in service cover
- Health benefits
- Financial advice and support
- Cycle to work scheme
- Employee discounts on vehicle purchases, servicing and parts across the John Banks Group
- Ongoing manufacturer training and development, paid for
- Current diagnostic equipment and tooling
- Workwear and PPE provided
- Monday to Friday — no weekend working unless overtime by agreement
How to apply
Send us your CV and a short note about your experience and what you are looking for. If you would rather have an informal, off-the-record conversation before you commit to anything, say so and we will arrange one — we are happy to talk first.
