About Coffee At Joe & The Juice
Joe & The Juice has recently transitioned from 'commercial' coffee to 'specialty' coffee, partnering with a top East London roaster to offer ethically sourced, specialty-grade coffee beans. We've upgraded our equipment and implemented advanced barista training to ensure every cup meets the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship. As part of this transformation, we are looking for experienced Lead Baristas to take ownership of the coffee section behind our bars.
Position Overview
As the Lead Barista at Joe & The Juice, you will be the driving force behind the daily operations of the coffee bar. Your role is to ensure that every customer receives a consistently high-quality specialty coffee experience while leading a team of juicers to do the same. You will manage the coffee bar's workflow, troubleshoot any issues that arise, and ensure that the team is working efficiently and cohesively. This position requires hands-on involvement in day-to-day tasks, from making coffee to training new staff and troubleshooting equipment. Your practical leadership will ensure that our coffee service is smooth, efficient, and always meets the high standards our customers expect.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of coffee preparation, including the operation of espresso machines, grinders, and latte art.
- Maintain a deep understanding of our coffee offerings, including sourcing, roasting profiles, and flavour notes.
- Ensure all beverages are prepared to the highest standards of quality and consistency, adhering to company recipes and guidelines.
- Train and mentor juicers, providing continuous feedback and support to elevate their skills and performance.
- Ensure cleanliness and organization of the coffee bar.
- Collaborate with the store manager on performance metrics (Flow % score KPIs).
- Take charge of the daily maintenance of coffee equipment by regularly deep cleaning the espresso machine, grinder and automatic tamper.
- Troubleshoot and/or report any coffee equipment issues.
Key Performance Indicators
- Flow % score: Joe & the Juice utilises the 'Flow' telemetry system, which tracks every coffee made behind our bars. Using this data, you will be responsible for ensuring that your store is hitting our minimum recipe targets.
- Maintaining/increasing coffee sales: Monitoring and implementing initiatives to help maintain and increase sales.
- Daily coffee equipment cleaning: Ongoing coffee equipment cleaning, maintenance and troubleshooting on a daily basis.
Experience
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience as a barista, ideally with 1 year in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Proven expertise in specialty coffee preparation and an in-depth understanding of coffee culture.
- Previous experience with high-volume, fast-paced, specialty coffee service environment is required.
- SCA qualifications is preferred but not required.
