  • Own the technical design, building, testing and refinement of the sensor suite
  • Deploy a permanent multimodal ecological monitoring network across the UK
  • Ensure sensor data transfers reliably and securely from sensors to Echo's data pipeline
  • Lead day-to-day field operations for the Stage 1 rollout across the UK
  • Plan logistics and lead a small team of technicians and temporary staff
  • Coordinate site access and on-the-ground logistics with land managers and delivery partners
  • Develop and continuously improve field survey management plans and SOPs
  • Pilot new methods before wider rollout
  • Train and supervise field staff
  • Conduct periodic field audits for data quality and protocol adherence
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, software and datasets to improve ecosystem-condition characterization and scalability
  • Report to the Director of Ecological Research

Requirements

  • Demonstrable experience designing and delivering large, multimodal sensor networks from the ground up
  • Experience with ecological monitoring technologies including bioacoustics, phenocams, microclimate sensors, automated dendrometers or similar devices
  • Experience designing, deploying and optimising telemetry and data transfer solutions
  • Knowledge of security best practice for unattended field hardware, including encrypted data transmission and tamper protection
  • Strong logistics skills for planning multi-site fieldwork across dispersed rural locations
  • Technical capability to evaluate and rapidly adopt emerging sensing solutions
  • Full, clean UK driving licence
  • Comfortable working independently outdoors in variable weather for extended periods
  • Confident communication skills to train and supervise field staff and build trust with land managers and partners
  • Experience with ecological survey methods including vegetation, bird, pollinator or soil sampling (highly valued)
  • Experience with data science techniques integrating remote sensing and spatial analysis (highly valued)
  • Experience discovering and repurposing novel data sources containing ecological signal (highly valued)
