- Own the technical design, building, testing and refinement of the sensor suite
- Deploy a permanent multimodal ecological monitoring network across the UK
- Ensure sensor data transfers reliably and securely from sensors to Echo's data pipeline
- Lead day-to-day field operations for the Stage 1 rollout across the UK
- Plan logistics and lead a small team of technicians and temporary staff
- Coordinate site access and on-the-ground logistics with land managers and delivery partners
- Develop and continuously improve field survey management plans and SOPs
- Pilot new methods before wider rollout
- Train and supervise field staff
- Conduct periodic field audits for data quality and protocol adherence
- Evaluate emerging technologies, software and datasets to improve ecosystem-condition characterization and scalability
- Report to the Director of Ecological Research
Requirements
- Demonstrable experience designing and delivering large, multimodal sensor networks from the ground up
- Experience with ecological monitoring technologies including bioacoustics, phenocams, microclimate sensors, automated dendrometers or similar devices
- Experience designing, deploying and optimising telemetry and data transfer solutions
- Knowledge of security best practice for unattended field hardware, including encrypted data transmission and tamper protection
- Strong logistics skills for planning multi-site fieldwork across dispersed rural locations
- Technical capability to evaluate and rapidly adopt emerging sensing solutions
- Full, clean UK driving licence
- Comfortable working independently outdoors in variable weather for extended periods
- Confident communication skills to train and supervise field staff and build trust with land managers and partners
- Experience with ecological survey methods including vegetation, bird, pollinator or soil sampling (highly valued)
- Experience with data science techniques integrating remote sensing and spatial analysis (highly valued)
- Experience discovering and repurposing novel data sources containing ecological signal (highly valued)
