- Produce and assure high-quality electrical designs across an Assets and Connections Portfolio
- Deliver designs to cost, time and quality targets
- Ensure designs meet UK Power Networks design and CDM standards for non-contestable and contestable works
- Produce electrical designs that can be constructed in compliance with standards and CDM requirements without supervision
- Assure other designs
- Deliver designs conforming to relevant Codes of Practice and company and industry standards for UKPN substations
- Contribute to technical, commercial and contractual documents for procurement of engineering products
- Ensure compliance with legislation, regulations and company procedures
- Comply with design assurance and audit processes
- Prepare concept and developed designs from specifications and drawings within defined periods
- Provide excellent customer service
- Work within larger multidisciplinary teams
- Liaise with operational teams from initial enquiry through final energisation and project closure
- Fulfil designer/principal designer requirements under the 2015 CDM Regulations
- Eliminate hazards and reduce risks from remaining hazards in conjunction with CDM
- Support and mentor team members to enhance technical knowledge and experience
- Undertake site visits, including entry to operational substations
Requirements
- Strong Electrical engineering background and experience in electrical engineering
- Knowledge of power system and protection design at 132KV, 33KV, 11KV, and intermediate voltages
- Ability to work with external engineering organisations and customers/stakeholders representing UKPN
- Capable of final sign off of designs in specific area
- Good safety culture and sound understanding of Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations and their application
- Ability to work unsupervised, set and comply with own targets, and identify and implement innovative cost saving solutions
- Good team working skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Awareness of current and technological developments in distribution plant and equipment
- Degree level or equivalent in engineering or science
- Chartered Engineer or working towards achieving Chartership
- Extensive knowledge of design processes and relevant DNO, ENA and International Design Standards, including relevant operational aspects
- Business, environmental, safety, financial, and regulatory awareness
- Appreciation of financial reporting systems
- Knowledge of project management
- Proficient in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation
- Broad knowledge of cables and overhead lines
- Willingness and ability to undertake site visits and enter operational substations while complying with mandatory safety rules and procedures
