- Own mechanical design of high-precision components and complex sub-assemblies from requirements through manufacture-ready release.
- Produce 3D CAD models in SolidWorks PDM, bills of materials, assembly methods and manufacturing drawings.
- Perform structural and thermal analysis covering thermal modelling, heat transfer, stress and fatigue in room-temperature and cryogenic environments.
- Apply design-for-manufacture principles and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Resolve mechanical integration, interface and packaging clashes across components and assemblies.
- Work with suppliers and manufacturers on drawing, tolerance and production queries.
- Apply mechanical design principles associated with EMC, CE and FCC requirements for equipment enclosures.
- Support fit, build, integration and design-verification activities in laboratory, preparation-room and workshop environments.
- Identify design issues, improve designs using production feedback, and share technical knowledge across the engineering team.
- Report to the Head of Design Engineering within Engineering Operations.
Requirements
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Experience leading the design-to-manufacture process for high-precision components and assemblies.
- Strong 3D CAD and production-drawing capability, using SolidWorks or a comparable mechanical design platform.
- Experience conducting structural and thermal finite-element analysis using Ansys Mechanical or similar simulation software.
- Experience supporting physical builds, integration or design verification.
- Practical understanding of design-for-manufacture principles and factors influencing component quality, tolerances, cost and production feasibility.
- Experience resolving technical, drawing and manufacturing questions directly with suppliers.
- Strong technical-documentation, work-planning and delivery skills.
- Clear stakeholder communication and ability to work with subject-matter experts from different engineering disciplines.
- Strong planning, adaptability, attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
- Nice-to-have: experience with cryogenic, vacuum, aerospace or other high-precision environments; EMC, CE or FCC requirements; integration and initial hardware builds; PLM, PDM and BOM management; cryogenic mechanical design; GD&T and FMEA.
