Overview
The role sits within the European Syndicate.
Responsibilities include providing P&I and FDD (Freight, Demurrage and Defence) claims handling services and advice to Members based across a number of European countries, including Switzerland, Scandinavia, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Croatia, and Turkey amongst others.
Additional responsibilities include promoting the relationship between the Club and existing Members for which the Claims team is responsible and representing the Club at a senior level; handling assigned claims in accordance with company procedures and providing advice and support on claims-related issues; identifying the need for loss prevention activity; processing large claims in line with operating procedures where requested by the Syndicate Manager or Claims Director and where appropriate for such claims to be handled by an Associate; ensuring that all electronic correspondence relating to claim files is promptly and correctly filed in accordance with agreed practices and maintaining updated e-files; contributing to the development of company procedures and systems; producing articles for Club publications; participating in meetings with brokers, service providers, correspondents and lawyers; understanding the importance of the Club/Member relationship and identifying areas of additional service that add value; breaking down and solving problems through quantitative thinking and analysis; supporting the Syndicate Underwriting objectives; carrying out other duties within the scope of personal skills and abilities when reasonably instructed; attending training and developing relevant knowledge and skills; and performing any other ad hoc duties as required.
Responsibilities
- Provide P&I and FDD claims handling services and advice to Members across Europe (including Switzerland, Scandinavia, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Croatia, and Turkey).
- Promote the relationship between the Club and Members and represent the Club at senior levels.
- Handle assigned claims in accordance with company procedures; advise on claims-related issues and identify the need for loss prevention activity.
- Process large claims in line with operating procedures when requested by the Syndicate Manager or Claims Director and where appropriate for such claims to be handled by an Associate.
- Ensure that all electronic correspondence for assigned claim files is promptly and correctly filed and that e-files are maintained and updated.
- Contribute to the continuous development of company procedures and systems.
- Produce relevant articles for inclusion in Club publications.
- Participate in meetings with brokers, service providers, Club correspondents and lawyers.
- Understand the importance of the Club/Member relationship and identify areas of additional service that will add value.
- Break down and solve problems through quantitative thinking and analysis.
- Support the Syndicate Underwriting objectives.
- Carry out other duties within the scope of personal skills and abilities when reasonably instructed.
- Attend appropriate training and develop relevant knowledge and skills.
- Perform any other ad hoc duties as required.
Requirements
- Previous experience handling shipping litigation and dispute resolution, from either another P&I club, insurer, law firm, or ship owner / charterer.
- Qualified lawyer (preferably English-qualified) with experience equivalent to approximately 2 years’ PQE, or degree-educated (LLB or LLM in Maritime Law or equivalent) with at least 3 years’ relevant claims-handling or industry experience.
- Excellent communication skills, including negotiating, presenting, and reporting (written and verbal).
- Ability to build and maintain effective business relationships at all levels, both internally and externally.
- Highly organised, motivated, and enthusiastic with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to deliver high quality work within agreed timeframes and prioritise workload.
- Proficiency in a European language, in addition to English, is an advantage but not essential.
- Proactive, self-motivated, and able to work collaboratively as part of a team.
