BEAR Scotland is a leading road maintenance and management service provider in Scotland, maintaining and improving Scottish Trunk Roads including bridges and structures through some of the most scenic, but challenging, parts of the country.
The Northwest Trunk Road Unit spans some 1,422km of trunk road through some of the most scenic parts of the country. It covers a huge area of Scotland, from Thurso and Wick in the very north of the Highlands down to Campbeltown in Argyll and Bute, from Uig on Skye to Perth and Stirling.
We are looking for a proactive and organised Assistant Roads Manager to join our dedicated Planned Maintenance team on a full-time basis. In this key role, you will support the delivery of essential road maintenance across some of Scotland's most iconic routes.
Reporting to the Planned Maintenance Manager, you will take charge of the day-to-day management of a skilled team, overseeing the delivery of both Structural Maintenance and Routine Maintenance programmes within your designated area. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a hands-on role in maintaining and improving vital infrastructure β while developing your leadership skills in a supportive and forward-thinking environment.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Assist the Planned Maintenance Manager and Roads Manager in ensuring all operations are delivered in line with contract requirements, maintaining high standards across the board.
- Oversee the day-to-day activities of a dedicated team responsible for delivering both structural and routine road maintenance within your region. You will ensure budgets are fully utilised and financial targets are met.
- Plan and manage a steady pipeline of work for both internal teams and subcontractors, ensuring smooth and efficient delivery across all projects.
- Act as Principal Designer or Principal Contractor when required, ensuring all scheme designs are safe, fit for purpose, and compliant with relevant technical standards and risk assessments.
- Uphold all company policies and procedures, and ensure full compliance with Health & Safety, CDM regulations, environmental standards, and accessibility requirements. You will also liaise with clients, emergency services, local authorities, and other key stakeholders.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Relevant Civil Engineering degree
- Professionally qualified or working towards professional qualification (IEng/CEng)
- Knowledge of current design standards
- Working knowledge of contract control and management systems
- Ability to work to tight deadlines and work under pressure
- Ability to produce innovative solutions to engineering problems
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Full approved UK Driving licence
