The opportunity:
Our client is a newly formed, high-end technology and consulting venture backed by a world-leading management consultancy and a globally recognised alternative investment firm. Built from the ground up in Newcastle city centre, the mission is simple: assemble an exceptional engineering team and deliver technically rigorous, high-impact solutions to clients operating at the sharp end of Financial Services and Alternative Investments.
This is not a maintenance role and not a scaled delivery factory. This is about building, leading, and shipping serious software, fast, with real accountability and direct exposure to end users and decision-makers. If you are a strong engineer who can lead by example, communicate clearly, and take ownership of complex problems end to end, this role will suit you.
What You Will Be Doing:
- Lead and develop a small, high-calibre team of software engineers, providing hands-on technical direction and day-to-day leadership.
- Stay deeply involved in design and delivery, remaining technically hands-on across the full development lifecycle.
- Work directly with users, stakeholders, and subject matter experts to shape requirements and deliver pragmatic, production-ready solutions.
- Take early ownership of end-to-end software delivery, from problem definition through to deployment and iteration.
- Partner closely with client teams, working collaboratively rather than at armβs length.
- Challenge existing systems and processes where they limit outcomes, using technical excellence to drive better results.
- Keep pace with modern engineering practices and technologies to ensure the team stays ahead of the curve.
What Makes a Strong Profile:
- Strong programming background with deep experience in one or more of the following: C#/.NET, Java, Python, or Rust.
- Proven ability to deliver complete software solutions, not just isolated components.
- Comfortable taking ownership, making decisions, and running towards hard problems.
- Clear, professional communicator with the ability to engage engineers, stakeholders, and clients.
- Curious by nature, with a genuine interest in understanding business problems and building domain knowledge.
- Entrepreneurial mindset and a bias towards action.
- Energy, ambition, and grit matter more than prior people management titles.
- Financial Services experience is useful but not required.
- A minimum 2.1 degree in Computer Science or a closely related subject from a leading UK university.
Why join:
- Immediate impact: you will be trusted from day one to shape delivery, standards, and team culture.
- Technical leadership without stepping away from code: this role stays hands-on.
- Exposure to complex, high-stakes problems closely linked to global markets and real-world events.
- Work alongside engineers and consultants who set a very high technical and professional bar.
- First-hand exposure to how financial markets and investment firms operate, guided by industry experts.
Role Summary:
This is a senior, hands-on leadership role for an engineer who wants real responsibility rather than a diluted management title. You will lead by example, stay close to the code, and take ownership of complex software delivery from first principles through to production. The environment is demanding, fast-moving, and collaborative, with high expectations around technical quality, communication, and judgement. In return, you get autonomy, influence, and the opportunity to help shape a new engineering culture from the ground up.
