The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for managing and delivering electrical engineering and technical activities through the application of specialist expertise, established engineering processes, and professional experience. Operating with a high level of autonomy, the Senior Electrical Engineer provides technical leadership, ensures design integrity, and contributes to the safe and efficient delivery of complex engineering projects. The role supports project delivery across all lifecycle stages, while mentoring and developing less experienced engineers within the electrical discipline.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and verification of electrical systems and equipment, ensuring compliance with project specifications, safety requirements, and industry standards.
- Produce, review, and approve engineering deliverables including calculations, schematics, single-line diagrams, cable schedules, equipment specifications, and technical reports.
- Apply sound engineering judgment to resolve complex technical challenges and provide practical, cost-effective solutions.
- Ensure all relevant procedures, codes, and standards (e.g., BS, IEC, IET Wiring Regulations, ISO, IEEE) are correctly identified and adhered to throughout project execution.
- Contribute to the Project Safety Assessment process, identifying and managing technical and safety-related risks.
- Maintain awareness of all applicable Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) standards and ensure compliance within the electrical discipline.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Promote effective collaboration across electrical, control, mechanical, civil, and systems engineering teams.
- Engage with customers, suppliers, and stakeholders to develop relationships, resolve technical issues, and ensure alignment of design solutions with project requirements.
- Support project managers by providing accurate progress updates, risk assessments, and technical input to ensure successful project delivery.
Leadership & Mentorship
- Provide guidance, mentoring, and technical leadership to less experienced electrical engineers, graduates, and apprentices.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging innovation, standardisation, and best practice sharing within the electrical engineering community.
- Lead small engineering teams or work independently to deliver work packages to high quality, on time, and within budget.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Degree (or equivalent qualification) in Electrical or Electronic Engineering.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or actively working toward Chartership.
- Significant experience in electrical design, analysis, and system integration within the nuclear, defence, energy, or industrial sectors.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively in multi-discipline engineering teams across the full project lifecycle.
- Strong understanding of power distribution, control systems, instrumentation, electrical protection, and safety systems.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interface effectively with clients and internal stakeholders.
Desirable
- Member of a recognised professional institution (e.g., IET) or eligible for registration with the Engineering Council.
- Experience managing electrical engineering scope from concept design through detailed design and into Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC).
- Familiarity with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations), IEC standards, and UK regulatory frameworks.
- Experience working on both commercial and defence-related projects.
Other Requirements
- May be required to travel domestically or internationally to support project and client requirements.
