Overview

Engineering Project Manager – Electrical & Instrumentation Systems in Hazardous Environments

Salary: £50-£70,000 DOE + car allowance + bonus

Type: Permanent, full-time

Location: Hybrid West Sussex + UK travel & occasional international travel

The Company: A specialist engineering business delivering electrical, instrumentation and fluid-handling systems into safety-critical environments across the UK and internationally. They design, engineer, integrate and support complex assets from concept and build through to testing, commissioning and handover, working with both industrial and commercial clients. Their reputation is built on technical integrity, quality delivery and practical engineering excellence.

The Opportunity

This is a senior Engineering Project Manager role where you will take ownership of the technical delivery of a large and varied project portfolio, managing multiple live projects at any one time at different stages of the process, some running over multiple years. This role is best suited to someone who enjoys setting priorities, managing competing deadlines, and owning the engineering detail, rather than pure people management. You will personally pull together scopes, lead designs, manage approvals, and see projects through to build, commissioning, and handover.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Owning the full engineering lifecycle: survey, scope, concept design, detailed design, delivery and handover
  • Managing multiple concurrent engineering projects across electrical, mechanical and process disciplines
  • Acting as the technical authority between commercial, design, production, quality and commissioning teams
  • Supporting the commercial team with technical input, proposals, and costings
  • Coordinating internal electrical design engineers and external specialist consultants
  • Managing design certification, approvals, and client sign-off
  • Overseeing the transition from design into production and build
  • Working closely with commissioning teams to ensure systems are delivered and handed over correctly
  • Maintaining regular client communication and technical confidence throughout the project lifecycle

This is a hands-on management role; you will personally drive a significant proportion of the engineering workload rather than delegating everything.

Technical Environment

  • Electrically biased systems with mechanical and hydraulic integration
  • Fuel storage, transfer, and fluid-handling systems
  • Large fabricated assets including tanks, skids and packaged systems
  • Highly regulated and safety-critical environments (aviation, industrial, hazardous areas)
  • Use of external design consultants and certifying bodies

What We’re Looking For

  • Essential:
  • Strong electrical engineering background (E&I / controls / systems)
  • Proven experience delivering engineering projects end to end
  • Comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Confident interfacing with clients, consultants, and internal teams
  • Strong organisation, prioritisation, and communication skills
  • Willingness to travel occasionally within the UK and internationally
  • Highly desirable:
  • Experience in fuel systems, process engineering, oil & gas, aviation, or similar regulated sectors
  • Exposure to ATEX, CompEx, or hazardous-area environments
  • Experience working with HAZOP documentation and design approvals
  • Understanding of mechanical and hydraulic integration
  • HNC, HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering or similar

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Genuine technical ownership, not just project tracking
  • Influence across design, delivery, and client relationships
  • Exposure to complex, long-life engineering projects
  • Opportunity to shape engineering delivery as the business grows
  • Trusted, senior role within a specialist engineering environment
