For almost 50 years, Williams F1 has been at the forefront of one of the fastest sports on the planet, being one of the top three most successful teams in history competing in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. With an almost unrivalled heritage of engineering and racing F1 cars and unforgettable eras that demonstrate it is a force to be reckoned with, the British squad boasts 16 F1 World Championship titles to its name. Since its foundation in 1977 by the eminent, late Sir Frank Williams and engineering pioneer Sir Patrick Head, the team has won nine Constructors’ Championships, in association with Cosworth, Honda and Renault. Its roll call of drivers is legendary, with its seven Drivers’ Championship trophies being lifted by true icons of the sport: Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve. The team has made history before and is out to make it again with a long-term mission to evolve and return to the front of the grid.
As our DIL Development Engineer, you'll be a driving force in the DIL (Driver-In-the-Loop) Development Team, whose mission is to deliver a world-leading Driver-in-the-Loop simulation environment. This role is a cornerstone of the team's significant recent investment in this critical area, underscored by the acquisition of a new, state-of-the-art DIL simulator. This facility is at the heart of our performance programme, essential for validating vehicle concepts, optimising driver performance, and making mission-critical decisions that directly translate to on-track success.
Responsibilities
- Push the boundaries of simulation to achieve the ultimate level of realism and correlation with our on-track reality.
- Engineer a platform that delivers flawlessly repeatable and reproducible results, providing a trusted foundation for engineering development.
- Instil a zero-downtime philosophy, predicting and eliminating any potential for lost operational time.
- Maximise the velocity of the end-to-end process, from system start-up to the delivery of actionable, data-driven insight.
- Develop robust, intuitive, and maintainable systems that empower our engineers and drivers.
- Ensure the seamless integration of the DIL platform into the team's wider data and simulation ecosystem.
- Continuously scout for emerging technologies and pioneering simulation techniques, strategically integrating innovations to maintain our competitive edge and define the future of F1 simulator.
About You
The role requires a degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics (or related field) and prior experience in Formula 1 or top-tier motorsport within vehicle dynamics, performance, or race engineering. You must have hands-on experience with Driver-in-the-Loop or real-time simulation systems (e.g. dSPACE, Speedgoat, Beckhoff), strong proficiency in simulation and data analysis tools such as MATLAB/Simulink and Python, and a deep understanding of vehicle dynamics, HIL systems, motion platforms, telemetry, and performance optimisation. Experience with rFpro and good software development practices are advantageous. The ideal person is a clear communicator and team player with a pragmatic, hands-on approach to problem solving. They are highly organised, resilient under pressure, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. A proactive mindset, attention to detail, and a curious mind are essential!
