PE Global is recruiting an experienced Secondary (Protection & Control) Engineer to support the delivery of complex Transmission and Distribution projects for a leading client based in Birmingham within the UK electricity sector. The role is an initial 6‑month contract and is hybrid. The rate for this role is 430 p/day Umbrella.
This role involves leading and delivering technically robust Protection & Control (P&C) and associated auxiliary system designs across voltage levels from 400kV to 11kV, ensuring compliance with UK and international standards while meeting programme, budget, and client expectations.
Key Responsibilities- Lead, design, check, and approve Protection & Control schemes in line with relevant standards (ISO 9001, BS, IEC, Technical Policies, National Grid / DNO standards).
- Deliver Secondary Engineering work packages across Transmission and Distribution projects.
- Prepare and contribute to Design Intent Documents, Technical Specifications, and detailed engineering deliverables.
- Produce and review:
- Protection & Control schematic diagrams
- LVAC and DC systems (battery and charger sizing)
- Cable sizing, schedules, and core sheets
- Relay settings and associated calculations
- Wiring diagrams and approvals
- Minimum HNC/HND in an engineering discipline with 5+ years relevant experience or 9+ years’ experience in lieu of formal qualifications.
- Proven experience in Secondary Engineering (Protection & Control) within the UK electricity supply industry.
- Strong knowledge of Transmission and/or Distribution networks (400kV to 11kV).
- Working understanding of DNO and National Grid standards, procedures and drawing practices.
- Experience producing and reviewing detailed P&C engineering documentation.
- Proficient with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office and Windows‑based engineering tools.
- Ability to work to tight deadlines in high‑pressure project environments.
- Strong communication, analytical and teamwork skills.
- Previous experience working with major contractors, utilities, or OEMs (e.g. National Grid, DNOs, large EPCs) is highly desirable.
