As a Trainee Camera Operator, you will learn how to set up and operate cameras for interviews, events, and creative filming. This role is ideal for someone with an interest in video production, filming, or photography. Some basic experience using a camera or filming on a phone is helpful, but full training will be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with setting up cameras, lenses, tripods, lighting, and other filming equipment.
  • Support the filming of interviews, events, and creative shots such as b-roll under guidance.
  • Learn and apply basic filming techniques, including framing, composition and lighting.
  • Help prepare filming locations by arranging equipment, checking lighting conditions, and ensuring the set is safe and organised.
  • Work closely with the production team during shoots, following instructions and supporting smooth filming.
  • Organise, label, and back up video files after shoots to maintain a clear workflow.
  • Assist with basic equipment maintenance, storage, and troubleshooting.
  • Learn to operate additional accessories such as microphones, stabilisers, monitors, and other production tools.
  • Follow on-set safety procedures, risk assessments, and equipment handling guidelines.
  • Contribute creative ideas when appropriate and assist with improving shot quality or production setups.
  • Maintain a professional and positive attitude when working with team members, contributors, or clients.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of cameras or filming, even if only through personal or phone-based filming.
  • Good attention to detail, especially when setting up equipment or framing shots.
  • Strong willingness to learn and develop technical skills in camera operation and production.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Creative awareness, with an interest in visual storytelling, composition, and framing.
  • Ability to work well in a team, supporting others during shoots and setup.
  • Good organisational skills, particularly when managing equipment or handling video files.
  • Reliable timekeeping and the ability to work to filming schedules.
  • Basic problem-solving skills, especially for simple equipment issues.
  • Basic understanding of lighting setups or audio equipment (e.g., microphones).
  • Experience using editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve) for simple tasks.
  • Ability to troubleshoot minor technical issues during shoots.
  • Understanding of file management, backing up footage, and organising media.
  • Creative thinking and the ability to visualise shots or suggest ideas during filming.
  • Experience working on creative projects such as school media projects, YouTube content, or personal filming.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environments and adapt quickly to changing situations.
