Little Izzie’s Play Café is seeking a reliable and professional Café Assistant to support the day-to-day operation of our family-friendly café. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a high standard of customer service, including welcoming customers and ensuring a positive experience throughout their visit. Duties will include preparing and serving hot and cold drinks, serving tray bakes and light refreshments, and handling cash and card payments accurately. The role also involves maintaining excellent standards of cleanliness and hygiene, including safe food handling practices in line with health and safety regulations.

In addition, the Café Assistant will be required to tidy, clean, and reset the play area after each session to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for children and families. The ideal candidate will be organised, dependable, and able to work effectively as part of a team. Previous experience in a café, hospitality, or customer-facing role is desirable but not essential, as training will be provided. An Access NI check will be required due to working in close proximity with children.

Responsibilities
  • Provide a high standard of customer service by greeting customers warmly and responding to enquiries in a professional and friendly manner.
  • Prepare and serve hot and cold drinks in accordance with café standards.
  • Serve tray bakes and light refreshments safely and efficiently.
  • Follow safe food handling procedures and maintain compliance with food hygiene and health and safety regulations.
  • Operate the till, process cash and card payments accurately, and handle cash responsibly.
  • Complete basic cash handling tasks, including balancing the till and reporting discrepancies.
  • Assist with opening and closing the café, including setting up service areas, equipment checks, and securing the premises.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organisation of the café, including food preparation areas, seating areas, and customer facilities.
  • Clean, tidy, and reset the play area after each session to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures at all times.
  • Work effectively as part of a team to support smooth daily operation.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work confidently with children and families.
  • Strong cash handling and basic numeracy skills.
  • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, safe food handling and hygiene practices.
  • Ability to prepare hot and cold drinks to a consistent standard.

  • Attention to cleanliness, safety, and detail.
  • Ability to multitask effectively in a busy environment.
  • Previous barista experience, including preparing a range of hot and cold drinks.
  • Experience working in a customer-facing role, particularly with young families and children.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage positively and professionally with customers.
  • Confidence in explaining menu items and responding to customer enquiries.
  • Experience handling cash and using a till or POS system.
  • Understanding of food hygiene standards and safe food handling practices.
  • A calm, friendly, and professional manner always.

Job Start Opportunity - Working Hours Information:

  • Standard Hours: up to 25 hours per week.
  • Flexible/Reduced Hours: May be available upon approval by a Work Coach.
  • Additional Hours: The employer may offer extra hours depending on availability. This should be discussed directly with the employer before starting employment.
