Food Production Assistant in retail supports the preparation, cooking, portioning, and packaging of fresh food products sold in the store. They ensure food is made to high quality standards, work safely in accordance with food hygiene regulations, and help maintain well-stocked and appealing food displays for customers.
Responsibilities
- Food Preparation & Cooking: Prepare and cook ready-to-eat meals, bakery goods, salads, and hot foods following recipes and portion guidelines.
- Food Preparation & Cooking: Operate kitchen equipment safely and ensure food meets quality standards.
- Packaging & Merchandising: Portion, package, and label products accurately; maintain attractive, well-stocked displays.
- Packaging & Merchandising: Rotate stock using FIFO and monitor product quality.
- Food Safety & Hygiene: Follow HACCP and hygiene regulations; clean and sanitize work areas and equipment.
- Food Safety & Hygiene: Conduct temperature checks and prevent cross-contamination and allergen risks.
- Operational Duties: Receive and store deliveries, measure ingredients, and follow production schedules.
- Operational Duties: Minimise waste and complete required checklists and documentation.
- Customer Interaction: Assist customers with product enquiries and serve foods from counters when required.
- Other duties as and when required.
Skills and Qualifications
- Previous experience in food production, deli, café, or kitchen work (preferred but not required).
- Knowledge of basic food preparation, cooking methods, and food safety.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Good attention to detail and ability to follow recipes accurately.
- Basic math skills for weighing, measuring, and portioning.
- Physical ability to stand for long periods and handle moderate lifting.
- High standards of cleanliness and quality.
- Team player with good communication skills.
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
Further Information
Standard Hours: up to 25 hours per week. Flexible/Reduced Hours: May be available upon approval by a Work Coach. Additional Hours: The employer may offer extra hours depending on availability. This should be discussed directly with the employer before starting employment.
