The Warehouse Assistant will support the day-to-day running of the ABC Food Hub, helping to receive, sort, store, and prepare food stock for distribution to partner foodbanks, social supermarkets, breakfast clubs, and community groups.
The role provides a supported entry-level opportunity for someone wishing to develop practical workplace skills in a busy, friendly warehouse environment, under the supervision of the Warehouse Manager.
Responsibilities- Assist with receiving deliveries, unloading items safely, and checking deliveries against paperwork.
- Sorting, labelling, and storing these deliveries following established warehouse procedures.
- Rotate stock using FIFO (first in, first out) to ensure food safety and minimise waste.
- Prepare outgoing crates, boxes, and orders for partner organisations.
- Assist in preparing for collection by community partners.
- Help to develop partner organisation relations and with our Foodbank project which is closely linked.
- Develop awareness of our work of redistributing food items to charities, schools and other organisations to feed those from disadvantaged or financially struggling backgrounds.
- Follow all health and safety procedures, including manual handling, hygiene, and equipment use. Reporting any hazards, breakages, or issues to the Warehouse Manager promptly.
- Participate in on-the-job training, including manual handling, food hygiene, and warehouse systems while developing employability skills such as timekeeping, communication, teamwork, and task planning.
- Receive regular supervision and support to build confidence and competence in the role.
- Use of Microsoft Office tools.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Good knowledge of Health and Safety.
- Ability to work within a team.
- Proven experience in warehouse operations or similar roles.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
- Operating computerised stock system.
- Organising of collections/deliveries.
- Ability to work independently.
- Full driving licence.
- Ability to follow instructions.
- Able to lift and move stock as required.
- Previous experience in a warehouse environment.
JobStart Opportunity - Working Hours Information:
- Standard Hours: up to 25 hours per week.
- Flexible/Reduced Hours: May be available upon approval by a Work Coach.
- Additional Hours: The employer may offer extra hours depending on availability. This should be discussed directly with the employer before starting employment.
