The Charity Retail Assistant helps with till work, stock processing and maintaining a clean, tidy and attractive shop so customers have a positive experience and the charity can maximise income. The post holder will learn key retail routines including donation intake, basic security and loss prevention practices, and safe working in a busy shop environment.
Responsibilities
- Sales and cash handling: Learn to operate the till, handle cash and card payments accurately, follow pricing, and issue receipts in line with charity procedures.
- Stock processing and merchandising: Sort donations, price items, steam or prepare goods, and create attractive, well organised displays to maximise sales.
- Health, safety and housekeeping: Use safe lifting techniques, keep walkways tidy, manage waste and recycling, and maintain a clean, safe, welcoming shop environment.
- Donation intake and stock preparation: Receive, log and sort donated items, carry out basic quality and safety checks, wipe or steam goods, and prepare them for pricing and display.
- Shop security and loss prevention: Follow opening and closing routines, monitor fitting rooms and high value items, tag or secure stock where required, and report breakages, suspicious activity or discrepancies in line with charity procedure.
Skills and Qualifications
- Communication skills, able to speak clearly with customers, donors, staff and volunteers.
- Willing to learn how to use the till, follow cash handling and shop procedures, and ask for help when unsure.
- Able to follow instructions, work as part of a team and help keep the shop clean, safe and well presented.
- Interest in charity retail, fashion, recycling or re-use, and in supporting a learning disability charity.
- Some experience of customer service, handling money, or working/volunteering in a shop or similar environment.
Further Information
Standard Hours: up to 25 hours per week. Flexible/Reduced Hours: May be available upon approval by a Work Coach. Additional Hours: The employer may offer extra hours depending on availability. This should be discussed directly with the employer before starting employment.
