Butchery Assistant - supports the butcher or meat department by preparing, cutting, packaging, and displaying meat products while maintaining high standards of food safety, cleanliness, and customer service. They help ensure customers receive fresh, high-quality meat and a positive shopping experience.

Responsibilities

  • Cut, trim, portion, grind, and slice meat safely; assist with specialty products and follow recipes accurately and package and label meat with correct weights, prices, and expiry dates.
  • Apply HACCP principles, maintain cleanliness, prevent cross-contamination, and manage allergen risks and ensure proper storage, temperature control, and FIFO stock rotation.
  • Assist customers with enquiries, special orders, and provide advice on cuts and cooking methods.
  • Safely use knives, slicers, grinders, and other tools; clean and maintain equipment; report faults promptly.
  • Receive and store deliveries, monitor stock levels, rotate products, and record waste or discrepancies.
  • Maintain a clean workspace, follow production schedules, and assist with opening/closing procedures.
  • Lift and handle heavy loads safely, stand for long periods, and maintain precision in cutting tasks.
  • Collaborate with butchers and colleagues, communicate clearly, and support workflow during busy periods.
  • Ensure consistent cuts, accurate packaging, and high standards of cleanliness and presentation.
  • Reliability, adaptability, strong work ethic, and commitment to quality and safety.
  • Other duties as and when required.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Basic Food Hygiene (training will be provided).

JobStart Opportunity - Working Hours Information:

  • Standard Hours: up to 25 hours per week.
  • Flexible/Reduced Hours: May be available upon approval by a Work Coach.
