As an Ornithologist, you will play a leading role in delivering ecological services across a diverse portfolio of projects, including residential, commercial, renewable energy, major infrastructure, and strategic land developments.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced ecologist with a recognised specialism in ornithology to join a growing multidisciplinary consultancy.

You will lead ecological surveys, manage projects from inception to completion, provide technical advice to clients and colleagues, and mentor junior members of the ecology team.

All under the guidance and support of the Senior Team.

The role combines technical knowledge with project management and significant fieldwork.

You will be expected to lead complex ornithological survey programmes, produce high-quality technical reports, and work collaboratively with the other disciplines to deliver integrated environmental solutions.

Whilst this position will ideally be based in our York office we are open to candidates based in Birmingham, Edinburgh and Manchester .

Travel to other offices and project sites will be required as part of the role.

Full time and part time working will be considered for this role.

If successful, you will

  • Lead the design, coordination and delivery of ornithological survey programmes, including breeding and wintering birds, and species-specific surveys.
  • Prepare or assist with ornithology chapters of Environmental Statements.
  • Design pragmatic mitigation, compensation and enhancement strategies for species and habitats.
  • Provide ecological advice throughout planning, design and construction.
  • Ideally have a second specialism e. g. UKHab surveys, protected species surveys.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, planning authorities, statutory consultees and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Ideally mentor and support junior ecologists through technical guidance, report review and field-based training.

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years' consultancy or equivalent ecological experience.
  • Strong technical expertise in ornithology with demonstrable experience designing, leading and interpreting bird surveys.
  • Strong knowledge of UK wildlife legislation.
  • Strong project management skills including programme and budget management.
  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Willingness to travel.

Desirable Requirements

  • Degree in Ecology, Zoology, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
  • Member of CIEEM.
  • Schedule 1 bird species licences.
  • Experience supervising ecological field teams would be advantageous.
  • A secondary ecological specialism, ideally botany (FISC qualification or equivalent experience would be advantageous).
  • Experience of renewable energy and solar developments.
  • Experience delivering ecological work for major infrastructure and NSIPs.
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary consultancy.
