As an orthoptic assistant you will play a crucial role making a difference in our patients' lives by being a first line of contact for patients or parents as well as other hospital and professional staff. You will be responsible for:

  • Providing orthoptic administrative duties as well as clinical assessments in vision, colour vision, intraocular pressure, ophthalmic imaging, virtual glaucoma and neuro-ophthalmic clinics.
  • Providing administrative support to the Orthoptic and Ophthalmic Technician Team, including clinic coordination, timetabling, and procurement.
  • Being the first point of contact for patient, parent, and staff queries.
  • Line managing Band 3 ophthalmic technicians and supporting the Head Orthoptist and the Ophthalmic Technician Coordinator with managing staff leave, sickness cover, and general service provision.
  • Organising and facilitating meetings/training days, including minute taking.
  • Undertaking clinical duties under the direction of registered orthoptists and leading technician-led clinics.
  • Supporting the training and induction of new staff.

This post will include some Saturday work. Being able to work independently and within a team is essential for the role. Some of these clinics are offsite, and some Saturday working may be required.
