An exciting opportunity has arisen for an aspiring leader to take their career to the next level. Applications are invited from experienced, suitably qualified HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists, with demonstrable senior level experience. The successful candidate will be the scientist section lead of the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratory within the directorate of Infection and Immunity.

Responsibility will primarily be for the Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (H&I) laboratory, but the successful candidate will be expected to work with existing managers within Microbiology and Virology. The successful candidate will oversee day to day operations of the H&I laboratory, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, optimal resource management and effective team leadership. You will play a key role in supporting renal and stem cell transplantation programmes and immunological services.

Joining a supportive, collaborative and forward thinking team, you will work in a highly specialised and impactful field, directly contributing to improved patient outcomes. The post holder will manage the technical service of a major section of the department or a group of smaller sections, and will take a lead role in the implementation of new equipment / techniques as directed.

The post holder is required to be able to supervise a wide range of technical procedures, including complex specialist diagnostic tests, in the section they are currently managing. They will also have in depth knowledge of the science behind those procedures in order to be able to train / educate and problem solve. The post holder will be expected to undertake departmental managerial duties as delegated by the Directorate Manager.

The post holder will take department wide responsibility for a major aspect of service delivery. To assess the suitability and appropriateness of samples submitted to the laboratory and to take remedial action when required. To analyse specimens for screening, diagnostic and clinical management of patients using complex, specialised and very expensive equipment.

To interpret technical validity of results, which may be anomalous, incomplete, complex or conflicting, using professional knowledge and experience. To make technical assessments of method and instrument performance by monitoring quality control used on specialist laboratory methods and analytical systems. To use empathy and understanding to ensure that technical, clinical and linguistic barriers to understanding are overcome.

To report results to clinicians and other service users in accordance with SOPs. To provide advice to clinicians and other service users regarding specimen types, timing of collection of specimen and turnaround times. The post holder will be the senior person on site for significant periods and will be responsible for all departmental activity during these periods.

Trust policy requires that the cost of submitting & processing the successful applicant/s DBS application be recovered via salary deduction following start in post. The amount of £23 (standard disclosure) or £43 (enhanced disclosure) will be deducted from salary, in manageable monthly instalments for up to 3 months following commencement of employment. Bank posts require upfront payment.

Extensive clinical, and in depth technical experience of the areas managed and all the methodologies, analytical instrumentation and operational procedures appertaining to that laboratory. Significant post registration experience. Proven managerial experience, Bachelor of Science degree, Health Professions Council Registration, MSc or FIBMS qualification or equivalent. Must maintain a professional development portfolio.

Desirable criteria: A Formal management qualification.
