Overview: We are seeking an experienced Lead Mechanical Engineer – A&D to provide technical leadership and delivery across mechanical engineering activities within semiconductor manufacturing equipment development. This role includes both hands-on technical responsibility and leadership of a small team of mechanical engineers, ensuring robust engineering governance, compliance, and high-quality delivery across complex product development programmes.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership & Delivery
- Accountable for mechanical engineering delivery across projects, subsystems, and technology developments
- Lead and guide mechanical engineering activities across multi-disciplinary project teams
- Provide technical direction across product development programmes
- Team Leadership
- Lead and motivate a team of approximately 6 mechanical engineers (where applicable)
- Support capability development, mentoring, and performance management
- Drive a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement
- Engineering Governance & Standards
- Promote and implement best-practice mechanical engineering methods
- Ensure compliance with safety, quality, regulatory, and industry standards
- Maintain strong technical governance across engineering outputs and decisions
- Project & Work Package Management
- Devise and distribute engineering work packages across cross-functional teams
- Support project delivery through key milestones through to production readiness
- Ensure alignment with time, cost, quality, and specification requirements
- Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure designs meet regulatory and customer requirements by design
- Apply structured risk assessment and design review techniques (PHA, HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA)
- Ensure compliance with semiconductor industry standards (e.g. SEMI S2, SEMI S10)
- Technical Development
- Develop subject matter expertise in relevant areas of mechanical engineering
- Progress towards Principal Engineer-level capability and recognised technical expertise
Skills & Experience Required
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering (Bachelor’s essential, Master’s desirable)
- Chartered Engineer or working towards (desirable)
- Significant experience in mechanical engineering/design (essential)
- Experience in regulated and compliance-driven industries (essential)
- Strong understanding of safety and design compliance standards (e.g. SEMI, EN standards)
- Experience leading or mentoring engineering teams
- Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles and engineering governance
- Ability to manage complex technical delivery across multi-disciplinary teams
- Commitment to continuous professional development
