Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic pharmacist or a current trainee pharmacist who will qualify this year to join our rotational team. This position offers an operational and clinical pharmacy role to meet the demands of our West Middlesex site.

Training and Development

As a member of our team, you'll gain comprehensive experience across various aspects of hospital pharmacy, including Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Cardiology, Acute Medical Units (AMU), Technical and Cancer Services, Patient Services, and care for Older People. Each rotation is designed to provide the necessary supervision and training, and there may be opportunities to undertake the Joint Programmes Board/UCL School of Pharmacy Postgraduate Diploma in General Pharmacy Practice.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Clinical and Operational Pharmaceutical Services: Participate in the provision of pharmaceutical services at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust, West Middlesex site, rotating through various specialist areas every four months.
  • On-Call and Shift Work: Participate in on-call, weekend, and shift rotations, and engage in seven-day working schedules as required.

Job Description

  • Patient Services: Supervise and validate the dispensing process. Dispense medications for inpatients and outpatients, including clinical trials and controlled drugs. Check and oversee dispensing by technicians, assistants, and trainee pharmacists. Counsel outpatients according to local, national, and legal standards. Manage stock control, dispensing workload, and dispensary staff. Participate in service audits and contribute to the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Undertake specific projects as needed.
  • Clinical Pharmacy Services: Rotate through various clinical areas, including medicine, surgery, paediatrics, cardiology, oncology, and haematology. Provide ward/clinical pharmacy services and ensure prescriptions are safe, accurate, and cost-effective. Advise professional staff on medicines management and optimisation. Participate in clinical training schemes and implement local formulary recommendations. Engage in risk management and audit medicines-related policies. Ensure timely and accurate medication supply and monitor patients for adverse effects. Support patient discharge planning and contribute to the development of medicines management systems.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Deputise for senior staff as needed. Participate in weekend, public holiday, and on-call rotas. Engage in performance reviews, audits, and project work. Assist in training and supervising pharmacy technicians, assistants, and trainee pharmacists. Promote safe, effective, and economic use of medicines. Maintain professional accountability and a record of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Attend departmental meetings and support quality initiatives.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications:

  • Essential: Vocational Master's Degree in Pharmacy, completion of pre-registration training, and registration as a practising pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Desirable: Royal Pharmaceutical Society Membership and Certificate level in General Pharmacy Practice.

Experience:

  • Essential: Pre-registration training in hospital pharmacy.
  • Desirable: Experience with Pharmacy computer systems and stock management programmes.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Essential: Excellent communication, problem-solving, risk assessment, and interpersonal skills.
  • Desirable: Experience in hospital pharmacy settings.

Personal Qualities:

  • Essential: Positive approach to on-call and weekend commitments, attention to detail, team-oriented, and able to work well in a busy environment.
