Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated pharmacist to lead the surgical pharmacy team within Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH). This role has become available due to an internal secondment within the pharmacy department. As a Divisional Lead Pharmacist, you will manage a diverse team of specialist and rotational pharmacists, medicines management technicians, and assistants, ensuring exceptional care across the pathways. You will serve as a clinical role model, providing direct patient care at an expert level, and be a key member of the Pharmacy Clinical Management Services Team. Supported by the Pharmacy Department and Divisional Leadership Team, you will drive the development and delivery of high-quality pharmaceutical care, continually improving our services.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Lead and manage the clinical pharmacy service within the Directorate.
  • Line manage the team of Specialist Clinical Pharmacists.
  • Provide expert, patient-facing clinical pharmacy services within the Division, serving as a clinical pharmacist role model.
  • Support the Division on all matters relating to medicines, including governance and safety.
  • Demonstrate compassionate leadership, inspiring and motivating the team.
  • Be part of the Pharmacy Clinical Services Management Team, collaborating regionally and nationally to deliver excellent care.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, and strategically develop clinical pharmacy and medicines management services within the Surgery Division.
  • Line manage Specialist Clinical Pharmacists and other team members within the Surgical pharmacy team.
  • Support team members in delivering optimal clinical pharmacy services.
  • Provide expert patient-facing clinical services to one or more clinical areas within the Surgical Division.
  • Foster collaborative working relationships with colleagues, maintaining professional relationships and gaining cooperation.
  • Inspire and motivate individuals and teams to achieve high performance standards and personal development.
  • Organize and deliver service objectives.
  • Promote a learning culture by delivering education, training, and development.
  • Utilize research to deliver effective practice and identify research opportunities to inform practice.
  • Participate in the 7-day shifted rota and bank holiday duties, including general clinical pharmacy duties.
  • Work across both the Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham City Campuses.

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential:
  • B.Pharm / BSc (Pharmacy) or MPharm.
  • Diploma in clinical pharmacy or equivalent experience.
Desirable:
  • Leadership and/or management qualifications.
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification (MSc or higher in clinical pharmacy or relevant clinical specialty).
  • Qualified independent prescriber actively practicing.
  • Further training in advanced clinical skills.
Professional RegistrationsEssential:
  • GPhC registered.
  • Member of a relevant national specialist pharmacist group.
Desirable:
  • Active role in a relevant national network/specialist pharmacist group.
ExperienceEssential:
  • Broad knowledge of various clinical areas.
  • Extensive hospital experience (post-registration).
  • In-depth pharmaceutical skills and knowledge within a relevant specialty.
  • Experience in project management and evidence of completed outcomes.
  • Effective liaison with relevant Trust-level committees/groups.
  • Experience in training and education of pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals.
  • Experience in MDT working.
Desirable:
  • Experience leading and delivering clinical pharmacy services to a specialty/cluster.
  • Evidence of published research.
  • Experience as a line manager/mentor.
Communication and Relationship SkillsEssential:
  • Ability to influence and negotiate with senior clinicians, managers, and stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
Desirable:
  • Experience writing compelling business cases for service development.
  • Experience addressing large groups.
Analytical and Judgment SkillsEssential:
  • Experience assessing and minimizing risk associated with service provision and medication processes.
  • Ability to make judgments involving highly complex facts, requiring analysis, interpretation, and options appraisal.
  • Evidence of incorporating innovative and ‘best practice’ into current practice.
Desirable:
  • Experience assessing/adjudicating at a national level.
